‘You are joking’… Winger says he could not believe Manchester United wanted to sign him

Amad Diallo has recalled the moment he found out he was signing for Manchester United in a heartwarming interview.

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to sign Atalanta winger Amad Diallo for a fee believed to be in the region of £36 million if all of the add-ons were met in the deal with the Italian side.

Amad was originally targeted after the club failed to get a deal over the line for Jadon Sancho back when he was at Borussia Dortmund and instead targeted the Ivorian and Facundo Pellistri.

However, barring a superb header against AC Milan, things have not really worked out for the young winger due to injury problems or simply not receiving enough game time to impress.

Amad on moment he found out United were interested

Speaking to the United website after a difficult few months out of the team with injury, the Ivorian showed why he remains a popular presence amongst the fanbase when he recalled the moment he found out the Red Devils were interested.

“I remember I was at home and the director called me,” the 21-year-old said. “He said: ‘Amad, United want to sign you’.

“I say: ‘Really? United? No, no, you are joking, you joke!’ So he’s like: ‘Yeah, yeah’. ‘Really, really? Okay give me the contract. I sign directly’.

“He said: ‘No, Amad, come on’. And I say: ‘Yes, really, it’s Manchester United. It’s my dream to play at Old Trafford. He said: Really?’ I say: ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. Give me the contract and I sign directly. I say you are not joking with me are you, or is it true?’ He said: ‘No, it’s true’ and I was so happy.”

The winger has had loans at Rangers and most recently in the EFL Championship with Sunderland, where he scored 13 times in England’s second division.

Amad’s chance to prove himself

What is clear from the Ivorian’s interview is that he is fully committed to the Red Devils and will remain a popular figure with the fanbase throughout this season.

When he came on against Nottingham Forest, the winger straight away added dynamism and good link-up play with the attackers around him and the Red Devils struck the post following good work from the Ivorian.

As Antony continues to falter and Pellistri potentially on his way out of the team on loan according to HITC Football, the 22-year-old really has to take his chance at Old Trafford in the next few weeks.
