Wout Weghorst’s game by numbers in Manchester United’s defeat to Newcastle

Wout Weghorst had a very disappointing game as Manchester United were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle.

The on loan Dutchman’s search for his first Premier League goal for the club goes on. He has scored only twice so far, in cup competitions.

This was his ninth Premier League start for Manchester United, and Wout Weghorst could now see himself dropped to the bench with Anthony Martial making his return.

The numbers do not make for pretty reading for the Dutchman, just like his display made for awful viewing.

Wout Weghorst game by numbers

Wout Weghorst struggled to gain any kind of foothold in the game, and was substituted in the 61st minute.

He had only 10 touches in total. Anthony Martial had 15 in the half hour he played, by comparison.

Weghorst had one shot, which he fired wide into the side netting at the near post, when it would have made more sense to fire across the goal.

In possession he was barely involved, as his 10 touches showed. He completed only four passes. Martial, by comparison, made nine.

Weghorst lost two of two ground duels and lost the one aerial duel he contested. A zero per cent duel success rate added to the woefulness of his display.

He came into this match on the back of a poor international break in which he failed to score against Gibraltar in 90 minutes.

Weghorst has had some good games in a United shirt, take the FA Cup fifth round win against West Ham in which he created five goalscoring chances.

If you were mounting a defence on his display against Newcastle, you would say that no Manchester United player performed well, and that’s true.

And United did concede the two goals after Weghorst went off. But that may merely have been coincidental.

The big Dutchman looks like he needs a break. Anthony Martial’s return suggests he may get one.
