‘Worry to death about him’… Paul Scholes concerned about Man United star after pre-season performance

Paul Scholes is yet to be convinced by one of Erik ten Hag’s signings at Manchester United.

It has been a summer of mixed emotions for the Red Devils. Early deals for Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro created a buzz around the club and the upcoming season.

But injuries to Rasmus Hojlund and Yoro dampened the mood and a 3-0 loss to arch-rivals Liverpool in the United States was not the ending Erik ten Hag had planned.

United went toe-to-toe with Arne Slot’s side in South Carolina and showed glimpses of brilliance, but ultimately the side struggled in front of goal and defensive mistakes proved costly.

Supports picked out Amad Diallo and Scott McTominay as United’s best players in the match, whereas Andre Onana was disappointing between the sticks.

Paul Scholes on Andre Onana

The Cameroon international arrived at United last summer in a £44million deal from Inter Milan.

He had big boots to fill at Old Trafford after four-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year winner David de Gea left as a free agent.

Andre Onana started poorly in United colours with far too many mistakes – especially in the Champions League – but his form improved as he settled in.

Speaking on The Overlap, United legend Paul Scholes revealed that he still has big concerns about Onana heading into the new season.

“I still worry about the goalkeeper,” said Scholes. “The goalkeeper is a big concern for me. Even watching the pre-season games, a couple of the goals he conceded against Liverpool.

“I worry to death about him.”

Andre Onana at Manchester United next season

If Scholes already had reservations about Onana, he will not like what United’s No.1 had to say this week.

Onana warned fans that he is going to take more risks this season as Ten Hag’s side adapt to a high-risk style of play.

With United starting their campaign with a Community Shield clash against Manchester City this weekend, the spotlight is now on Onana to start this season better than last.
