Willy Kambwala made this Manchester United breakthrough during the injury crisis last season but has now made a surprising decision.
For Manchester United, this summer has seen the centre of defence take priority with as many as three arrivals being worked on right now.
This comes after a season of defensive injuries and in which Erik ten Hag’s side conceded more than a fair share of goals and shots.
But it wasn’t all bad, with academy starlet Willy Kambwala finally getting his breakthrough, impressing in particular against Liverpool.
Now though, he’s taken a shocking decision over a contract offer made by United.

Willy Kambwala rejects contract offer from Manchester United
Kambwala made his breakthrough last season, starting a run of games and impressing in the process, so it’s no surprise that United wants to extend the Frenchman’s contract, which expires in 2025.
But now according to Christopher Michel, the academy graduate has rejected an offer from United to extend his contract beyond its expiry next summer.
To make matters more pressing for the club, there have been enquiries for Kambwala from the MLS, France, Bundesliga and Spain which showcases that there is no shortage of suitors for the 19-year-old.
Michel then concludes by adding that Kambwala probably favours a move to La Liga if given the choice to move there.
Losing Kambwala would be an annoyance for United as he undoubtedly was due to play a role this coming season. But if the club are to sign Jarrad Branthwaite and Leny Yoro, Kambwala may see his opportunities limited and with no chance to get game time that could explain why he’s eyeing a move.
What Manchester United should do with Willy Kambwala
Kambwala is a lifelong United fan, and if he’s rejecting contract offers it’s for the good of his career and nothing more.
He probably sees the reports which indicate that United are overhauling the defence this summer and wonders where he belongs in this, especially with 18-year-old Yoro now being bid for.
Kambwala likely considers himself out in the cold if these deals are completed and therefore is looking to move away for regular game time – something he can’t be blamed for.
But he can get game time without departing United permanently, which is why a new contract and a loan would be a wise move for the player and the club.
