Why Gary Neville namechecked Mason Mount in his six-man Man Utd transfer vision for Ineos this summer

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville feels that Ineos could use Mason Mount as part of their major summer transfer spending spree for Manchester United.

All eyes will be on Ineos at the end of the 2025-26 campaign ahead of the continued rebuild of the Manchester United first-team squad under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s regime.

Ineos splashed out last summer and brought the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Senne Lammens through the doors of Old Trafford.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s regime are expected to have another busy summer and Gary Neville has admitted he would use Mason Mount for a possible transfer deal.

Gary Neville does not think Mason Mount is an effective substitute for Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes

Speaking after Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, Gary Neville insisted that the Red Devils need to bring three more defenders to the club.

“They definitely need back-up at full-back. Both sides, I would say,” he said on Sky Sports’ The Gary Neville Podcast.

“In an ideal world, you’d bring three defenders in. They need one of them [like Piero Hincapie and Ben White at Arsenal] that can play in two positions and support, then they need another top centre-back and a left-back.

“I think three defenders would be perfect.”

Outside of the continued revamp of the United defence, Neville turned his attention to the much-needed overhaul of the midfield area that is required from Ineos.

The 51-year-old ex-Man Utd captain is not convinced that Mason Mount can fill the role of Bruno Fernandes and would trade the ex-Chelsea ace for a forward option.

“Then they need two midfielders, in an ideal world, you’d think that five would be perfect,” Neville added.

“Then if you were being really greedy, you’d then swap out Mason Mount for another forward of some kind.

“Or maybe someone like Mason Mount because you’ve got to think about the fact the Bruno who is someone who is difficult to replace and Mason Mount half does that a little bit.

“Maybe somebody who can play in wide areas and sometimes No 10. Players like [Phil] Foden and [Cole] Palmer and [Rayan] Cherki.

“A flexible forward who can play No 10 if Bruno Fernandes isn’t there for whatever reason.”

Gary Neville names the most important areas that Man Utd must address in the summer transfer window

Outside of his dream scenario of the Red Devils making six new signings, Neville admitted that a centre-back and two midfielders are the bare minimum needed.

“I’m asking for six players there and I don’t think I’m being greedy; it’s just how much these players cost and how smart Manchester United can be,” he explained.

“The absolute [three] unequivocal [signings] are a top centre-back and two top central midfield players. Absolute unequivocal.

“But they’ve got to go and get two or three more around that to beef up the squad to enable themselves to compete and give Michael Carrick the best chance of being able to repeat the performances he’s had without the interference of Champions League games and cup competitions.”

Following United’s encounter with Nottingham Forest on Sunday, the Red Devils will play their final Premier League match of the season at the Amex against Brighton.
