Manchester United’s 2021 is over and it has been quite a year. It began with hope of a title challenge and ended with the team in a scrap for the top four.

At the start of the year nobody foresaw Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to the club and the Portuguese star has made a big impact.

Even after leaving previous club Juventus in August, Ronaldo is still their top goalscorer in 2021. Has his haul at United propelled him to be able to boast the same at United? Not quite.

Here is a look at how United’s top goalscorer list in 2021 breaks down…

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

Bruno Fernandes: 19 goals

Bruno Fernandes ends 2021 as Manchester United’s top goalscorer across the calendar year. 14 of those goals came last season and 5 this season.

United need to get Fernandes back on form, and while he is no longer the club’s preferred penalty taker, he has a lot more to offer than he has shown lately.

Edinson Cavani: 15 goals

Even though Edinson Cavani has only scored two goals this season so far, he still ends the calendar year with 15 in total. This number speaks volumes for how good he was at the end of last season.

Cavani scored seven in the Premier League at the back end of last season plus a further six in the Europa League knockout stages. Hopefully there will be a similar surge in the Champions League for him in 2022.

Mason Greenwood: 14 goals

Mason Greenwood’s goals have been balanced out across the two half-seasons, with the youngster bouncing back after a tough end to 2020.

Greenwood scored nine goals in the first half of 2021 and he has scored five goals this season to end the year as United’s joint third-highest scorer.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 14 goals

What a player. Cristiano Ronaldo is 36-years-old and he has scored as many goals as Mason Greenwood in just half a season.

Ronaldo’s 14 goals have nearly all been vital, with 13 of them either giving United the lead or equalising. These strikes included six goals in five Champions League games.

Marcus Rashford: 10 goals

Marcus Rashford is the fifth Manchester United player to end 2021 in double figures. Seven of his goals came last season and three this season.

Like Fernandes, Rashford ends the year out of form, without a goal in his last nine appearances. 2022 can provide a fresh start.
