The second half of last season was spent trying to implement a new style of play in a 3-4-2-1 formation, and towards the end of the season, Amorim prioritised the Europa League only to lose in the final.

According to Transfermarkt, United will end 2025 sitting 12th in the overall standings for the calendar year.

United played 38 matches across 2025, the equivalent of a full Premier League season, but only collected 50 points. The record stood at 13 wins, 11 draws and 14 defeats, with a -1 goal difference.
It means that the Red Devils ranked lower than the likes of Fulham, Brentford, Everton, Brighton and Crystal Palace. United earned 30 fewer points than Manchester City and 21 fewer points than arch-rivals Liverpool.

United’s defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round means that the only realistic chance of silverware in 2025/26 is the FA Cup.
The FA Cup campaign begins with a third-round clash against Brighton on January 11. Amorim is yet to win his first trophy as United boss, and a record-equalling 14th FA Cup victory for United would help to earn the trust of the fanbase.
Amorim is expected to finish in the top six and secure a return to European football for 2025/26. That will be his top priority this season, and so far the Red Devils are just about on track.
A return to the Champions League is on the cards if United can achieve a top-five finish. They are currently joint on points with Chelsea above them.
