Michael Carrick’s appointment as the next permanent Manchester United head coach feels inevitable over the coming weeks, but when might an announcement be made?
When appointed interim in mid-January, Michael Carrick was tasked with securing Champions League football, which at the time felt far-fetched.
However, since then, no club has claimed more points than Manchester United in the Premier League. The result of this has seen United claim a Champions League spot with relative comfort, sitting third in the league.
Wayne Rooney predicted this would earn Carrick the job on a permanent basis, and now it feels close to becoming official.
Michael Carrick has now beaten Liverpool, City, Arsenal, Villa, and Chelsea – Do you want him to be the permanent manager?
What did he get right (and wrong) vs Liverpool?
When Michael Carrick could potentially be named Manchester United head coach
With the season coming to a close in just over a fortnight, Carrick seeks clarity over his future as he will surely want to start planning for the 2026/27 campaign.
Well, according to Miguel Delaney on the Inside Football newsletter, the current expectations are that Carrick will get the permanent job.
The journalist reports that United’s hierarchy are delighted with the head coach.
The current expectation is that he will be announced at Old Trafford next weekend, around the last home game of the season against Nottingham Forest.
Although Delaney adds that until there is confirmation, the speculation will continue, despite no other names standing out.
United have been linked with Andoni Iraola, but with Crystal Palace looking to appoint him, it would appear that the biggest clubs haven’t been convinced of him.
Where does Andoni Iraola rank for you among Michael Carrick alternatives?
Would you want Iraola at Old Trafford, now he is ready for a new challenge?
Carrick should be appointed before United vs Nottingham Forest
Carrick has now been in charge for around five months, meaning United have had more than enough time to settle on the club legend as next permanent head coach, or alternatively decide otherwise.
So when the final whistle goes next weekend against Nottingham Forest, bringing the campaign at home to an end, Carrick’s future should be decided either way.
After the game, tradition says Carrick will give a speech, and doing this as the interim boss wouldn’t make sense, so he should be made official the minute that final whistle goes.
These post-final home game speeches set the tone for the summer, and Carrick should get the chance to usher in the new era.
So Ineos can’t wait any longer, appoint him or move on, but don’t make an indecisive mistake of waiting weeks and hindering summer plans for next season, which could see a title charge.
