Why internal hero Michael Carrick outshines Andoni Iraola for Man Utd job

Andoni Iraola is understood to be Michael Carrick’s strongest rival for the Manchester United head coach role.

According to The Telegraph, Andoni Iraola has emerged as the main candidate to rival Michael Carrick for the Manchester United job.

The Bournemouth coach is considered one of the best coaches in the Premier League, although he will leave the Vitality Stadium at the end of the current campaign.

That means Iraola, whose Bournemouth sit seventh in the Premier League, will be available in the summer. Here are three reasons why United’s internal hero Carrick outshines Iraola.

Michael Carrick has brought stability to Man Utd

Since taking charge of United’s first team, Carrick has won 9 of his 13 Premier League matches. This has United sitting third in the standings with four games left to play.

Iraola hasn’t won any major trophies at Bournemouth, so it could be argued that Carrick has done more in his short time as interim head coach than the Spaniard at the Vitality Stadium.

The 44-year-old has brought stability back to United, whereas Iraola hasn’t done enough to justify ripping that up and not allowing Carrick to build his own team.

Unrivalled ‘DNA’ and institutional knowledge

It has been well documented that Carrick has benefited from the fact that he has United DNA – from his 12 years as a player, many of which were in great Sir Alex Ferguson sides, but also as a coach.

Carrick has already accepted Ineos terms and is happy to work in their environment. He has spoken many times about wanting to do the best for United.

Ruben Amorim was proof that not every coach will get on board with Ineos, or Jason Wilcox, more specifically, but Carrick has had no issues with the hierarchy as of yet.

Michael Carrick warrants Man Utd deal

It would be harsh not to give Carrick the job, for no more than two years, with United on the verge of securing a Champions League spot.

Carrick returned and made key decisions that led to United’s improved form. They included reverting back to a back four system, bringing Kobbie Mainoo back into the side, and playing Bruno Fernandes further forward.

Mainoo’s new deal wouldn’t be possible if Amorim were still head coach, so Carrick has set United up for the future by giving the academy graduate a new lease of life at Old Trafford.

However, there are still questions over Carrick.

United fans remain split over whether Carrick is the right man.

That is why I don’t think it would be wise to offer a contract over two years, but I’m convinced he is more deserving than Iraola based on what I’ve seen.
