Ruben Amorim will be scratching his head over Manchester United’s lack of consistency.
After last week’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham, Ruben Amorim would have been hoping for – and expecting – a response against Everton.
However, Manchester United’s first-half performance was eye-opening in the worst way possible. Passive, slow and reactive, the Red Devils found themselves 2-0 down without offering any threat at the other end of the pitch.
Amorim slammed United’s “soft” display in his post-match comments, but thankfully he was able to spark a reaction from his players at half-time and a point was salvaged with a 2-2 draw.
Bruno Fernandes dropped deeper into midfield and played a crucial role in the two-goal comeback. United’s captain was at the centre of everything, even off the pitch with Fernandes involved in a bust-up with an Everton legend.

What Ruben Amorim told Man United players at half-time
United fans were fearing the worst at half-time. Another soulless performance suggested another defeat was on the cards and there was still plenty of time for Everton to add to their lead.
But Bruno Fernandes’ superb free-kick and Manuel Ugarte’s first United goal rescued some sense of pride, as well as a crucial point for the relegation fight the Red Devils now find themselves in.

After the match, Amorim revealed what he told his players in the Goodison Park dressing room.
“At half-time I said no matter the result we are going to do what we did in the week, with more energy,” Amorim said.
“It was not different in position. Different in quality.”
After a shocking first-half display, the obvious solution seemed to be trying something new, something different. However, Amorim took a big risk by deciding not to change anything, but instead to encourage his players to stick to the game plan he had drawn up.
Ruben Amorim proved a tactical point vs Everton
United fans were hoping that Amorim’s “spectacular” style of play would immediately be implemented when he was appointed in November, but that has not been the case.
Now four months into his spell, United players are still struggling to get to grips with Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. But the second-half display against Everton proves what Amorim has been saying all along – that he believes in his ideas.
Amorim clearly felt players didn’t follow the plan in the first half – that was plain for anyone to see. It felt like huge changes were needed at half-time, but Amorim kept his calm and encouraged his players to put into action what they have been working on in training, and it resulted in a much-improved performance.
Amorim has begged for more training time, and now players need to put that into practice. Not only in the second half, but from the very first whistle.
