Ruben Amorim has finally had some time to work with his Manchester United squad on the training pitch.
For the first time since Ruben Amorim arrived at Carrington in November, the Portuguese head coach has had a full week of training in a build-up to a match.
Well, not quite a week but it has been six days since Manchester United lost 2-0 to Newcastle at Old Trafford, marking a fourth successive defeat for the Red Devils.
Up next is perhaps the most challenging fixture of the calendar – a trip to Anfield to face Premier League leaders Liverpool.

United head to Merseyside as huge underdogs but the one silver lining is that Amorim has finally had time to train at Carrington after a hectic nine games across December.

Ruben Amorim has gone back to ‘basics’ in Man United training
Following the loss to Newcastle, Ruben Amorim revealed he only had four training sessions with a full squad since arriving as head coach.
“We have to continue to push. Remember we had like four training sessions all together. So that is important,” he said.
This week alone, he has had three full sessions and Amorim is feeling optimistic after some “really good” training days.
He explained that two of the three sessions have been spent going over the “basics” of his footballing philosophy, before the final training session was spent preparing specifically for Liverpool.
As quoted by Manchester Evening News, Amorim said: “Every team has their problems, even the best and we will try to find them – but to be honest I am more focused on our basics,” he said.
“So rather than trying to find things in Liverpool’s shape, I’m just really concentrating on the way are supposed to play our game, the way we clearly must play to win a football match and to maintain our ideas.
“When you don’t have the basics, you can’t do it and so you have to focus on them. We have one more training session and we will focus on the opponent then, but for two days we have just been doing the basics, focusing on our idea to play football, and doing our thing.”
New Year, New Man United
The turn of the year could be significant for Manchester United simply because the fixture schedule is set to slow down.
Amorim has repeatedly pleaded for more time on the training pitch and his wish will now be granted with seven games in January followed by just four in February.
Amorim is in the worst form of his career as a head coach, but United have no option but to back him, support him and help him turn things around in the second half of the season.

It would be a huge ask, but getting a result away at Liverpool could be a launchpad for a new start under Amorim in 2025.
At the least, he will want to see his training work paying off with some improved performances in the next few weeks.
