Manchester United’s pursuit of a new left-back this summer seems to have cooled after Lewis Hall updates.
Heading into the summer, Manchester United were reportedly keen to sign a left-back to compete with and take the game load from Luke Shaw during the 2026/27 campaign.
Lewis Hall was being considered by United, but with Shaw’s fitness better than ever after his best season yet at the club, spending £70m on a left-back doesn’t sound like a good use of the budget.
Simon Stone has recently suggested that United aren’t actively pushing for Hall, with a potential solution already at the club in the form of Harry Amass.

Which youngster are you MOST excited to watch during pre-season?
With the World Cup this summer, pre-season will have plenty of academy involvement🔮
Manchester United considering Harry Amass as Lewis Hall alternative
Hall would be a dream left-back signing, but with other positions being actively pursued, it could be a case that the £250m war chest won’t stretch that far.
Therefore, the competition for Shaw might come internally, and fresh off a brilliant loan Harry Amass is a strong contender.
Now, The Sun has claimed that while Amass is keen to head on loan for the 2026/27 season to get more first-team football, United may have other plans.
The report claims that well placed sources have not ruled out the possibility that Amass could actually stay and be the competition for Shaw next season.
Amass is absolutely ready to contribute, having taken the Championship by storm, and he also held his own in appearances for United during the 2023/24 campaign.
Man Utd’s Premier League fixtures for 2026/27 have now been CONFIRMED – What do you think?
Amass is cut from the same cloth as Hall and Luke Shaw
While currently not as ready or polished, Amass could absolutely be an alternative to Hall for United as at 19 he is two years younger, yet his development in the past couple of years has been massive.
Amass first made waves with the first-team during 2023 pre-season, where he showed signs that he could contribute. During this breakthrough, Shaw hailed Amass for his talent, predicting he would be a star.
Interestingly about Hall, Shaw and Amass is that they are all very similar in their technical ability, good crossers and just very well rounded full-backs.
So having Amass to learn from Shaw and play in the cups along with easier league and Champions League games, would be the ideal situation, saving United having to pay £70m for Hall who is arguably no better than Shaw right now.
Michael Carrick needs to give Amass his chances in pre-season, and we are certain he will be swayed.
