What Juninho Pernambucano said about Andrey Santos in 2023 was the ultimate compliment

Manchester United are set to sign Andrey Santos, and fans are keen to learn more about what he can do.

It is unusual that Manchester United spend £48 million on a Premier League player, and he is still somewhat of a mystery to supporters.

Andrey Santos spent a season on loan at Strasbourg, while at Chelsea he has frequently been utilised as a back-up behind Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

But there is a reason why United have splashed out on Santos, believing the midfielder has the potential to be a top star.

Santos has already been capped by Brazil, and has caught the attention of one of the club’s most cherished midfielders in recent years.

Set piece specialist Juninho Pernambucano had great praise for Santos when he signed for Chelsea in 2023.

Juninho was quoted at the time: “I’ve never seen a player, at 18, as ready as he is.

“Physically, he’s a beast, technically he’s on a high level. He’s not going to be better than me, he’s going to be much better than me.”

Andrey Santos is likely to impress

Andrey Santos is a signing I am excited about because of his combination of experience and potential.

While only 22, Santos has already amassed valuable know-how from his time in Ligue 1 and his spell on loan at Nottingham Forest, and his performances for Chelsea.

He has played in the Champions League and even the Club World Cup, and he has just scratched the surface on his potential.

Santos already has six caps for Brazil, and the World Cup highlighted how there will likely be a ‘changing of the guard’ for the Selecao.

Casemiro is expected to retire from international football, creating a gap for a player to step into. Santos is primed to do so, just like he is now doing at club level.

Santos does not possess the incredible free-kick qualities of Juninho Pernambucano, but there is a real chance that he ends his career with more international caps than the 40 the former Lyon star totalled.
