‘What an acquisition’… South American ESPN expert gives verdict on Ugarte to Man Utd as deal gets nearer

Manchester United are moving gradually closer to a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Not all transfers can be as instant as Manchester United’s lightning quick move for Sekou Kone.

United’s pursuit of Manuel Ugarte has moved along painfully slowly. Erik ten Hag did not deny a transfer is being worked on, instead simply stating he would provide an update when there was one.

Negotiations between United and PSG are into their final stages, with ‘almost complete‘ also translating to ‘not quite done yet’.

Manuel Ugarte helps Manchester United

Manuel Ugarte would be Manchester United’s first real midfield signing, with Sekou Kone initially set to go into the under-21 side.

The Uruguayan is a tough tackler who won more per game than any player in France’s Ligue 1 last season.

With United needing to find a long-term partner for Kobbie Mainoo, and take a little pressure off him, Ugarte is an ideal fit.

South American football journalist Luis Miguel Echegaray, an analyst for ESPN, believes Manchester United are striking gold with a move for Manuel Ugarte.

He writes: “What an acquisition for Man United. Manuel Ugarte is one of my favourite players ANYWHERE.

“A warrior who was in my Copa America Best XI, monstrous leader in tackles (led in Ligue 1 in 23/24 AND Primeira in 22/23) and still only 24. Him and Mainoo in the midfield: 🔥”

Ugarte in fact does not turn 24 until next April.

Ugarte fits United perfectly

Manuel Ugarte is a player who will become an instant fan favourite at Manchester United with his fully-committed performances.

In the same way United fans have taken to fellow South American, Lisandro Martinez, the spirit Ugarte plays with will endear him to the support.

Ugarte’s style of play and willingness to shield the defence may also suit Casemiro, who now looks set to stay. The Brazilian will get games alongside him and have more license to get forward.

Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are now in talks over the make-up of the deal, which could end up being a loan with an option to buy, beneficial for PSR.

One way or another, it’s heading in the right direction, and Echegaray’s enthusiasm about the move underlines why United fans are eager to see it get done.
