Wayne Rooney has held four different managerial jobs since hanging up his boots in 2021. An opportunity to return to Manchester United would appeal to the club’s all-time top scorer.
Manchester United are expected to appoint Michael Carrick as their permanent head coach this week, after overseeing an incredible improvement in the team since getting the job on an interim basis in January.
On top of that, Carrick’s backroom staff will be offered new deals to remain at Old Trafford. That applies to Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion.
Former United coach Andreas Georgson, who left to join Tottenham last summer, is in contention to return as part of Carrick’s staff. It remains to be seen if there will be more additions to the coaching team before the 2026/27 campaign kicks off.

Wayne Rooney open to coaching role at Man Utd
After managing teams like Derby County, D.C. United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle in the past, it remains to be seen if Wayne Rooney will ever return to the dugout.
It would take an offer from either United, Everton or England.
Speaking to Romario TV, Rooney spoke about how he still enjoys watching football after stepping away from management.
Although that wouldn’t stop him from returning to Old Trafford.
“I’ve tried coaching,” Rooney said.
“I’ve coached four teams. I’ve said previously the only way I come back into coaching now is with Manchester United or Everton.
“Now I know that would be very difficult and it would be a long shot but them two clubs are the only two I think, and England if that was ever available but at the minute I’m enjoying watching.
“I have four children, four boys all into the football, so I’m enjoying having time watching them.”
There is nothing to suggest Carrick is considering Rooney for a role, but it sounds like he would be willing to do it.

What did Wayne Rooney say about working with Michael Carrick?
Rooney spoke about potentially working with Carrick, if the 44-year-old asked for the legendary striker to join his backroom staff at United.
“Of course I would. It’s a no-brainer,” Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast.
“I’m not begging a job here by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would.”
