Wayne Rooney has explained what Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick should be thinking with a player like Mason Mount in his first-team squad at Old Trafford.
Mason Mount had impressed earlier in the season under Ruben Amorim after enjoying a consistent run of matches under the former Manchester United manager.
However, the 27-year-old Man Utd No 7 saw injuries once again catch up with him and the injury setbacks have disrupted Mount’s run of form under Michael Carrick.
Mount has only made three brief cameo appearances under United legend Carrick since Ruben Amorim was sacked by the Premier League club back in January.

Wayne Rooney thinks Michael Carrick could turn Mason Mount’s career around at Man Utd
Manchester United star Mason Mount has netted three times and registered an assist in 22 matches across all competitions in the 2025-26 campaign at Old Trafford.
The former Chelsea ace has struggled to rediscover his best form from his Blues playing days since he arrived at the Premier League club under Erik ten Hag in 2023.
Speaking after Man Utd’s 3-2 win over Liverpool, Wayne Rooney thinks that Mount is the type of player who has more to offer interim boss Michael Carrick at the club.
“You have players in there, like Mason Mount, or he’s a player who I think… he’s got a lot more to him and obviously he’s had injuries,” he said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.
“So, for someone like Michael Carrick, that might be a goal for him to say, ‘You know what, I’m going to bring Mason Mount back into making him a top player again and get back in the England squad and playing regularly for Man United.’ So, you don’t know.”

Wayne Rooney on the importance of Ineos appointing the next permanent Man Utd manager amid the Michael Carrick links
Rooney is convinced that the Red Devils’ summer transfer window will be more efficient when Ineos know who the Premier League club’s next manager will be.
“They certainly need some players coming in and some players going,” he continued.
“I think that’s for sure. So, the quicker they can get the decision on the manager and then I think that makes the whole business a lot easier.”
Carrick has been heavily linked with the vacant Man Utd head coach role after the 44-year-old Red Devils legend’s success at Old Trafford in the 2025-26 campaign.
