Wayne Rooney has admitted that one Manchester United star has been the “standout player” for Ruben Amorim after the Premier League win over Liverpool on Sunday.

Ruben Amorim’s men travelled to Anfield for their first match in the post-October international break, following Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland.

United made a strong start against Liverpool on the weekend after Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo combined for the Red Devils’ opener in the second minute of the tie.

Amad Diallo played Bryan Mbeumo through after the Liverpool defence switched off and the ex-Brentford star planted the ball in the back of the net with a superb finish.

Cody Gakpo netted an equaliser for the Reds with a close-range tap-in in the 78th minute, but United fought back against rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Bruno Fernandes picked out Harry Maguire for United’s winner in the 84th minute after the 31-year-old United captain lofted an exquisite ball from a first-time cross.

Wayne Rooney makes a major admission about Man Utd summer signing Bryan Mbeumo after the Liverpool match

Bryan Mbeumo has deeply impressed at Old Trafford since the Red Devils finally landed the 26-year-old French-born forward from Brentford in the summer.

Manchester United pursued Mbeumo and had two bids rejected before Brentford accepted the third bid that the Red Devils tabled for the Cameroon international.

Wayne Rooney has said that he was not initially convinced that Mbeumo would work out for United, but he now sees him as the Red Devils’ “best player of the season.”

“Amad played a great pass and [it was] a lovely finish from him [Mbeumo],” he told BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

“So, for me, he’s been Man United’s standout player all season. And he hasn’t got his reward for his hard work and his sacrifice he’s done for the team throughout the season.

“But I thought it was a great goal. And I’ll be honest, I was a bit sceptical when Man United signed him.

“I didn’t know whether he had the ability to come [and] play for Man United.

“But he’s proved me wrong and I think he’s been a great addition to the team. And by far, Man United’s best player of the season.”

United paid a hefty initial transfer fee of £65m to sign Mbeumo from Brentford in July, with the deal including add-ons worth £6m for the former Bees ace.

Mbeumo has excelled for United manager Ruben Amorim and Rooney singled out the “big attribute” that he saw from the Red Devils’ summer signing at Anfield.

“Yeah, well, I think initially he [was] sandwiched in between [Alexis] Mac Allister and [Virgil] Van Dijk, and Van Dijk comes through the back of him and hits Mbeumo, he hits Mac Allister.

“But what we seen is a great reaction. He got up, seen the ball [had] gone out wide and he reacted and ran forward.

“And it sometimes sounds simple, but that’s such a big attribute to have. He just ran forward in a straight line and Van Dijk didn’t. He switched off and it was a great pass.”

Mbeumo has played in nine matches across all competitions for United and the Cameroon winger has netted three times and registered one assist so far.
