Wayne Rooney has now praised Ruben Amorim for how he handled one key Manchester United star during the Red Devils’ stunning win over Liverpool at Anfield.

Manchester United defied the odds and the Red Devils produced a sensational performance under head coach Ruben Amorim on the weekend.

Liverpool hosted fierce rivals United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon and the Red Devils made an early impact against the defending Premier League champions.

Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock in only the second minute of the contest and United held a lead over Liverpool for the majority of the Premier League tie.

Cody Gakpo pulled one back for the Reds in the 78th minute, but Harry Maguire would steal the headlines after he scored United’s winner against Liverpool.

Bruno Fernandes produced a sensational first-time cross into the Liverpool box and the Manchester United captain’s ball found its way into the path of Harry Maguire.

Maguire proceeded to connect with Bruno Fernandes’ dangerous ball and the former Red Devils skipper headed home from close range in the 84th minute of the tie.

Speaking after the Red Devils’ superb result over Liverpool at Anfield, Wayne Rooney insisted that United manager Ruben Amorim made the right call with his tactics.

The 39-year-old legendary former Red Devils and England striker also reiterated the importance of Maguire’s role in the United first-team squad under Amorim.

“I was worried,” Rooney said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

“I was worried, to be honest. But you know what? I thought fair play to the manager because I think he got his tactics absolutely spot on.

“And I think bringing Harry Maguire in, I don’t know whether that was through injury or he had to, and I said a few weeks ago on here he’s such an important player for Manchester United.”

What Wayne Rooney noticed from Harry Maguire’s Man Utd performance vs Liverpool at Anfield

Amorim’s tactical system for United saw Maguire return to the starting XI after he was left on the bench for the 2-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Maguire was deployed centrally against Liverpool at Anfield, with Netherlands ace Matthijs de Ligt out on his right and fellow England defender Luke Shaw on his left.

Rooney added that the 32-year-old United centre-back showed his real “leadership qualities” with his impact against the defending Premier League champions.

“I know he got the winning goal, but his leadership qualities at Anfield, his experience, it was 100 per cent the right decision,” he continued.

“And [a] massive, massive call from him [Amorim], and tactically I thought Man United were spot on today.”

Maguire, who is out of contract with United in 2026, played the full 90 minutes for Amorim’s men during his side’s huge Premier League win over Liverpool on Sunday.
