Wayne Rooney claims former Man Utd man was ‘always going to struggle’ at Old Trafford, he reveals ‘main’ problem

England legend Wayne Rooney has dropped his verdict on why one former Manchester United man “wasn’t the same person” when he arrived at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney is widely considered one of the best Premier League strikers of all time after his prolific playing career at Manchester United.

The 38-year-old former United striker burst onto the scene at Everton under David Moyes and caught the eye of legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sir Alex Ferguson ensured that United completed the signing of Rooney in 2004 and the former Everton star enjoyed incredible success during his Old Trafford spell.

Rooney lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League, a Europa League, three League Cups and an FA Cup during his illustrious playing career with United.

The Three Lions legend went on to eclipse United legend Sir Bobby Charlton as the Red Devils’ all-time leading scorer.

Following Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, Rooney continued his career at United and later became club captain under former Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal.

Rooney’s legendary spell with United came to an end in 2017 after he left Old Trafford and completed a return to boyhood club Everton.

Rooney on former Man Utd man

Wayne Rooney had a brief second spell with Everton before playing for DC United and Derby County ahead of his retirement from football in 2021.

The Manchester United legend has since entered the world of coaching and management and took charge of his current role at Plymouth Argyle in May.

Speaking on The Overlap, Wayne Rooney opened up on David Moyes and how the Scotsman could not have the “control” at United as he did at Everton.

“I was a player under David Moyes at Everton and Manchester United,” he said on the Stick to Football episode.

“And the main thing for me was that he wasn’t the same person at United than he was at Everton.

“He never felt that he could have the control like he did at Everton and unfortunately, he was always going to struggle at a club like Manchester United.”

Patrice Evra talks Moyes’ Man Utd struggles

Moyes took charge of United in 2013 after Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out of Old Trafford following the Red Devils’ last Premier League title win.

However, Ferguson’s successor had a torrid spell and Moyes was sacked only 10 months into his reign at Old Trafford, despite signing a six-year deal in 2013.

Patrice Evra was on the latest Stick to Football show alongside Rooney and the United legend revealed the “biggest mistake” he spotted with Moyes at Old Trafford.

“His biggest mistake was in his first speech to the squad,” he said.

“He mentioned how we knew how to win already so he wanted our help to help him win trophies, which raised eyebrows amongst the squad.

“He made quite a few mistakes which made the players upset, so there were a few occasions when I went to Sir Alex Ferguson’s house, asking him to speak with Moyes as he was upsetting quite a few of the players.”
