The 5-2 victory over Leicester City on Wednesday evening continued to lift the mood around Old Trafford after a chaotic few days.

Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday and before the dust had even settled, United’s hierarchy were quickly moving on to hiring his successor.

Ruben Amorim verbally agreed to join United and the club are now closing in on an agreement for the 39-year-old Sporting Lisbon coach.

Ruud van Nistelrooy took interim charge of United against Leicester and booked a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, but it has become increasingly clear that he is only a temporary fix while the Red Devils wait for Amorim to be official.

United chief Sir Dave Brailsford was in attendance for United’s emphatic victory on Wednesday night, and he will have played a key role in the decision-making process behind Amorim’s appointment.

Brailsford was spotted among supporters at Old Trafford shortly after the full-time whistle and a video appears to record the United chief confirming the deal is “done”.

A viral TikTok video shows fans quizzing Brailsford about the Amorim deal, and he can be heard saying “Yeah it’s done, it’s done”, much to the excitement of surrounding fans.

When Ruben Amorim could take charge of Man United

Many United fans tuned into Sporting Lisbon’s 3-1 win over Nacional on Tuesday evening believing it could be Amorim’s farewell match.

The Sporting boss kept his cards close to his chest in his post-match press conference, but everything is falling into place for his appointment to become official after the Portuguese club released a statement confirming that United intend to trigger his release clause.

There was hope among United’s leaders that Amorim could take charge against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, but it seems that will not be the case.

Reports from Portugal first suggested that Amorim will fly to England this weekend after taking charge of one final Sporting game on Friday evening.

But a notice period attached to his contract has complicated matters and it now seems United may have to wait until November 10th before Amorim takes control.
