Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood is going to be expected to carry Getafe between now and the end of the season.
Mason Greenwood resumed his football career this season after criminal charges against him were dropped.
Manchester United sent Greenwood out on loan to Spanish side Getafe, and it is unlikely he will play for the club again, although investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe has pledged to re-assess the situation.
This may just be a ruse to heighten Greenwood’s transfer value, but one way or another, there will be an extra spotlight on the loanee between now and the end of the season.
Getafe pressure to rise on Mason Greenwood
Mason Greenwood has shown he is capable of still performing at a top flight level, impressing in La Liga.
This season he has managed to score seven goals, and also has five assists to his name.
Getafe rank 10th in La Liga, seven points off a European spot, and 16 points clear of the relegation zone. But their season has received a hammer blow.
Top scorer Borja Mayoral suffered a knee injury at the weekend. He has netted 15 goals this season.
Getafe assistant boss Patricio Moreno told AS: “Losing Borja would be a very hard loss.”
Marca report Mayoral has torn his meniscus and is expected to miss the rest of the season, although could target a Euro 2024 return with Spain.
Without Mayoral, Getafe will need Mason Greenwood’s goals more than ever. The Manchester United loanee is their second highest scorer, and while he has played second fiddle to Mayoral, and just added to what the Spaniard has done, now there is going to be added expectation on the 22-year-old to step up.
Possible role change for Greenwood could add to his value
Mason Greenwood should look at this as an opportunity. He has found his comfort zone at Getafe. Now it is time to push on.
Taking an extra role of responsibility in Mayoral’s absence is what he needs between now and the end of the season.
There is also the possibility that Greenwood will now shift from the right wing to play as a striker in Mayoral’s place.
This can help his chances of scoring goals, and demonstrate his versatility. And for Manchester United, it will add to his transfer value.
Getafe are pleased with him so far, with Moreno commenting: “Greenwood is playing very well and we are very happy with his day to day.”
