United loanee D'Mani Mellor makes first Salford appearance since August
Manchester United loanee D’Mani Mellor has made his first appearance for Salford City since August.
The 21-year-old joined the League Two side led by the Class of 92 on a season-long loan towards the end of the summer transfer window.
After recovering from a cruciate knee ligament injury, Mellor started the season playing in Neil Wood’s under-23s side.
The forward got a goal and an assist in his first two Premier League 2 appearances of the season.
He also captained the young Reds in our 3-2 EFL Trophy defeat against Lincoln City.
But similar to Manchester United teammate Di’Shon Bernard, Mellor joined League Two side Salford in a bid to gain crucial first team minutes at senior level.
But unlike Bernard, who made 30 appearances for Salford, 27 of which were starts, it’s been a frustrating spell for Mellor, which up to now hasn’t benefitted anyone.
After coming off the bench to make a one-minute debut against Newport County in August, Mellor only made the substitutes bench on two occasions during the first half of his loan spell.
Mellor’s inactivity led to him coming back to United to get some much-needed minutes for Wood’s under-23s in a one off game in December.
He was back on the Salford bench for Saturday’s win against Newport and came off the bench to play three minutes against Tranmere Rovers last night.
Mellor going back to Salford will hopefully mean Manchester United have been given assurances that the youngster will feature more frequently during the second half of the season.
After making his Manchester United senior debut against Astana alongside a number of his academy teammates, it must be difficult for Mellor seeing his good mates playing regularly at their respected loan sides.
His first loan move away from Manchester United hasn’t worked out so far, but after showing great resilience to come back from a serious injury, Mellor will be itching to make his time at Salford a success.
