United linked with Alexander Isak move amid Cristiano Ronaldo concerns
Manchester United have been linked with a move for Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak as a potential replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo, who turned 37 yesterday is unlikely to stay in the summer should the Reds miss out on Champions League qualification.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner played two UEFA Cup matches for Sporting Lisbon 20 years ago, but the prospect of Ronaldo playing in the Europa League two decades from his last appearance in Europe’s second ranked club competition is unfathomable.
The Portuguese international’s United contract expires at the end of next season, but there is the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months.
If interim boss Ralf Rangnick manages to secure Champions League football then Ronaldo will likely stay, see who the club’s next permanent manager is and expect plenty of comings and goings in the summer transfer window.
Alexander Isak on United’s radar
According to the Mirror, both Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in the Swedish forward Isak.
The 22-year-old has a £76million buyout clause in his contract with the La Liga club.
United’s potential need for attacking reinforcements doesn’t necessarily hinge on Ronaldo’s happiness.
Edinson Cavani is out of contract at the end of the season, Anthony Martial is out on loan at Sevilla and Mason Greenwood is not being considered for selection.
United could go from having a wealth of options to lead our forward line to being threadbare.
Isak has eight goals from 31 Swedish caps and is shining at Real Sociedad, playing alongside the likes of former Manchester United wonderkid Adnan Januzaj and Manchester City legend David Silva.
After being signed by Borussia Dortmund at the age of 17, Isak struggled to live up to his burgeoning potential with the Bundesliga giants.
But after scoring 14 goals and making 7 assists from 18 games during a loan spell at Eredivisie side Willem II in 2019, Isak caught the attention of the Basque-based side.
From 115 games for Sociedad, Isak has 41 goals an 7 assists to his name, which includes 17 goals in La Liga last season.
Although Isak is tied down to a long-term contract which runs until 2026, the chances of signing the young Swede maybe more realistic than Erling Haaland.
A lot will depend on where and how United finish the season, but the Reds are going to have to eventually prepare for life without Cristiano Ronaldo again.
With Dusan Vlahovic now at Juventus and Haaland having an abundance of lucrative options, pursuing Isak could be a wise move by Manchester United.
