Two of Sir Alex Ferguson’s former players now offered chance to sign defender sold by Man Utd in 2021

A number of former Manchester United players are now in management and two of them could go head-to-head in a transfer battle.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s brilliance has surely played a part in so many of his former Manchester United players becoming managers.

Steve Bruce is at Blackpool, Ruud van Nistelrooy recently joined Leicester City and Besiktas just appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Wayne Rooney was recently sacked by Plymouth Argyle but Michael Carrick and Mark Robins are still in Championship jobs.

Carrick is in charge at Middlesbrough whilst Robins – the man often credited for ‘saving’ Ferguson’s job – recently became Stoke City boss.

Ferguson’s fingerprints are all over the game and one former United talent is now being offered to both Carrick and Robins.

Former Manchester United talent offered to Michael Carrick and Mark Robins

United fans will remember Timothy Fosu-Mensah and the early hype surrounding his potential.

The Dutch defender arrived from Ajax at 16 back in 2014, with many backing him for a big future.

Fosu-Mensah only managed 30 first-team games for United though and spent time on loan at Crystal Palace and Fulham.

United sold Fosu-Mensah to Bayer Leverkusen in 2021 but that move didn’t really work out either with the defender barely featuring under Xabi Alonso.

Released at the end of last season, Fosu-Mensah is still a free agent and seeking his next opportunity.

Wales Online now report that Fosu-Mensah is training with Ajax but has been offered to a host of Championship clubs.

Carrick’s Boro and Robins’ Stoke are two of them whilst Queens Park Rangers and Swansea City have also been contacted.

Having spent the first half of the season without a club, Fosu-Mensah is trying to find himself a new opportunity – and it may well be back in England.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah praised Michael Carrick at Manchester United

If Fosu-Mensah could pick any of those clubs to join, it may well be Middlesbrough.

As quoted by The Mirror in 2016, Fosu-Mensah praised Carrick how he was always trying to offer helpful advice at United.

Fosu-Mensah felt a rapport with Carrick with the former midfielder looking to pass on his experience at that late stage in his career at the time.

“It’s great to work with all the players here, especially the experienced ones,” said Fosu-Mensah.

“You train with them every day so you can see what they’re doing and talk to them. The older players speak with you and help you, especially Michael (Carrick).

“He speaks with me a lot and just gives me help with the little things. The team spirit we have here is great,” he added.

Fosu-Mensah loved working alongside Carrick as a player and may yet have the chance to play under him at Middlesbrough.
