Manchester United’s quest to win the Europa League finished with disappointment in Poland.
United only dropped into the competition after getting knocked out of the Champions League, and still nearly finished with the tournament’s top goalscorer.
Edinson Cavani scored six goals, despite only playing in five of Manchester United’s nine Europa League matches.
This saw him fall narrowly short of Europa League’s top scorers for the season, split between four players on seven goals, each of who played through the group stages.

Cavani not the only star performer
WhoScored.com have named their Europa League team of the season and who Manchester United players make the cut.
Taking in data from the start of the Europa League to the final, both Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Bruno Fernandes are named in the XI, which happens to be dominated with Dinamo Zagreb players.

Fernandes may have let himself down in the final, but he was irrepressible up until that point.
Match winning performances away at Real Sociedad and at home to Roma saw him rack up five goals and four assists from nine matches.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka also started all nine Europa League games and was a consistently strong performer who attacking opponents rarely got any change out of.

Ultimately these accolades do not mean much for a team still tasting defeat and coming to terms with the loss, but it at least acknowledges the contribution the pair made during the campaign as a whole.
There is plenty of criticism coming Fernandes’ way after he was shut down by Villarreal, and this comes with the territory of being the team’s star man.
When a player is so good so regularly, that he contributes 28 goals and 18 assists in a single season, he is expected to create magic every single time he steps on the pitch. Sometimes it does not happen, and sadly for United, one of those rare off days came on the day the team needed him the most.
