Three Manchester United stars named in BBC team of the week

Manchester United delivered an improved performance at the weekend, thankfully.

The only way was up after the 5-0 loss to Liverpool a week earlier, and United put in a real turnaround, winning 3-0 away at Tottenham.

So while doubts over whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the right man for the United job continue, the momentum for him to be fired has slowed down at least.

We will see what the situation looks like after United face City next weekend, a match which will present a far tougher test than Tottenham did.

United fully deserved the win over Spurs, as the better side at both ends of the pitch.

This led to three Manchester United players being named in the latest BBC Team of the Week.

Only one other team matched United, with Crystal Palace also having three selected.

Raphael Varane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani were selected in the BBC Team of the Week.

Pundit Garth Crooks, who made the selections, was particularly impressed by Ronaldo.

He said: “His volley against Tottenham that flashed by Hugo Lloris like a meteorite was of the highest order. What a pity a second was ruled offside because that strike was even better.”

Cavani scored United’s second goal after Ronaldo’s strike, while Varane helped the team secure a clean sheet upon his return to the side after missing the past two league games – in which United conceded 11 goals.

Crooks added that he still had his doubts over Solskjaer despite the win. As he should. Nobody is getting carried away by just one victory over a very poor Tottenham team.

It wasn’t just the Liverpool result which had United fans so disconsolate.

This win over Tottenham was the team’s first Premier League victory since the victory over West Ham on September 19.

United end the week in fifth position in the league, eight points behind Chelsea, although just three behind City, who suffered a shock defeat to Palace.

Next weekend’s Manchester derby looks to be shaping up as a huge fixture.
