Thierry Henry paid the ultimate compliment to Bruno Fernandes, linking Manchester United’s captain with Barcelona sensation Pedri to place him firmly in football’s most elite bracket of midfielders.
Bruno Fernandes was finally recognised as the best player in the Premier League this past season.
Despite rough beginnings to the 2025/26 season for Manchester United, which eventually led to Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January, results improved drastically in the new year under Michael Carrick.
Fernandes played an influential – as ever – role in United finishing third in the Premier League to secure Champions League qualification. His record-breaking 21 assists (in a single Premier League season) set him apart from the likes of Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne when it comes to providing opportunities for his teammates.

Bruno Fernandes believes Portugal can win the World Cup – Do you agree?
Thierry Henry names Bruno Fernandes among the ‘smartest’ footballers in the world
The best players in the world have in-game intelligence. They stand out for a variety of reasons.
Fernandes earns his place as one of the most intelligent players in the game because of the consistent influence he has over United as well as Portugal.
During the first round of group stage matches at the 2026 World Cup, former France forward Henry stated that Cristiano Ronaldo hindered Fernandes in Portugal’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo.
In a wide-ranging chat on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Henry put Fernandes in the bracket of football’s elite minds, grouping him with Barcelona sensation Pedri as one of the world’s smartest players.
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand asked Henry to name the player he looks at for brains in the modern game.
Henry said: “Bruno Fernandes. Pedri.
“Pedri has two. He has two brains. He has two. He has two brains.
“No, but look, those are the guys. Believe it or not, I always say to people when I used to play, I used to prefer an assist than a goal.
“And people always used to go, what? Come on, stop lying. No.
“Watch me when I used to score. It is simple. You can see it.
“How many times you saw me really smiling after a goal? I always used to think, so for example, let’s say I miss a goal, or I’m thinking even the game before, I missed, although we won, and I missed a goal, I’ll be like, so I’m thinking about the goal I just scored at the time.
“And for me, in my mind, I’m kind of like, how did I effing miss that last week or five minutes before and I scored this one? And I was always keeping that. But then, look at whenever I used to give an assist, I used to smile.
“And I always used to say that to people, he doesn’t smile, this guy. And I’m like, you’re wrong. I smile when I give an assist. But because assists at the time were not so much a thing. Now, obviously, when I assist, they assist. And by the way, which I think is how it should be, because I don’t know a lot of players that could score a goal without an assist.
“Who can take the ball from anywhere and then score? You don’t have a lot of people in that bracket. So therefore, it is very important. And by the way, it is.
“You pass the ball. You don’t run from everywhere with it, which I don’t mind that. And I think it’s kind of gone a tiny bit in the game, that part of it.
“But again, to go back to what you asked me before, which I will go back again, people do underestimate the power of the brain when we all know that’s the thing. That’s the thing that sends signals to the body. But then we don’t.”

Ex-Man Utd coach hailed for making Thierry Henry a ‘smarter’ footballer
Joaquim Francisco Filho is a former Brazilian coach who worked at United when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.
In 2002, he joined United as a youth coach, before also acting as an interpreter for Cristiano Ronaldo when the winger arrived as a teenager at Old Trafford in 2003.
Interestingly, Henry also worked with Filho during his time at the Clairefontaine academy.
Ferdinand asked Henry which people made him smarter as a footballer when he referenced Filho.
“I have one,” Henry added.
“And without that guy, I wouldn’t have been able to understand what Olsson was telling me and what Pep was telling me tactically. I wouldn’t have been able to. But that guy, I won’t give you his name. I think you came across him.
“Joaquim Francisco Filho, the Brazilian. Yes, that was my coach.”
Henry went on to say: “Like, I wasn’t clinical. And so, one time he came to me and he said, you can’t use your speed today. I don’t want you to beat anyone or do anything with your speed.
“And I’m looking at him and I’m like, how am I going to play? He said, figure it out. Do not use your speed. So now, suddenly, because he did that, that opened something in my head.
“OK, now I need to start to see, understand where the ball can go, movement, timing of the run. Because at least, you know, but he didn’t want, like, raw speed, distances, need to make sure that, you know, you can’t catch me. I’m not really in front of you. I’m not really close to the right back. I’m not really close to the other midfielder. By the time you talk, I’m gone.
“But then, I can’t use my speed. So, he somehow put a little dilemma in my head where I had to think. Then he gave me another one one day, as a nine. Thierry, I don’t care. Nobody knew. It was me and him. Today, I don’t want you to pass the ball back. You’re a nine. You can’t pass the ball back.”
