The ‘crazy’ Man Utd decision that has baffled both Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker, one pundit called it ‘weird’ moment

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer both saw eye to eye on one major Manchester United talking point from the 2025-26 season so far under Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United have won once, lost twice and picked up a draw from their opening four matches of the new season at Old Trafford across all competitions.

The Red Devils kicked off their Premier League season under Ruben Amorim against the Gunners last month and United lost 1-0 to rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Following the Premier League result against Arsenal, the Red Devils travelled away to Craven Cottage and United and Fulham played out a 1-1 draw in August.

United manager Amorim then saw the Red Devils’ season take a turn for the worse after his side crashed out of the second round of the Carabao Cup competition.

The Red Devils were in action at Blundell Park last Wednesday and Grimsby Town defeated United 12-11 on penalties in a stunning Carabao Cup upset.

Amorim received a major boost ahead of the September international break with the Red Devils’ first win of the season, with United beating Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer made one eye-opening point on Man Utd summer signing Benjamin Sesko

Benjamin Sesko made his first start for Manchester United in the second-round Carabao Cup defeat following his blockbuster move from German side RB Leipzig.

The 22-year-old Slovenian forward saw out the full 90 minutes at Blundell Park and Benjamin Sesko also converted a penalty in United’s shootout loss to Grimsby Town.

However, even United fans were baffled at Sesko stepping up as the 10th spot-kick taker last week and serious question marks were raised about the ex-RB Leipzig ace.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer admitted that they were surprised at Sesko being so far down the pecking order for penalties.

“And also, what I didn’t understand is Sesko taking [the] No 10 penalty, which was crazy,” Shearer said.

Lineker then interjected and added: “Yeah, that was weird.”

Premier League legend Shearer continued: “And him not starting again yesterday [against Burnley] when clearly Man United what they needed and when you’re spending 70-odd million on a centre-forward and you’re not prepared to put him in there after being really, really average or an average start.”

Ruben Amorim explained why Benjamin Sesko was the 10th penalty kick taker for Man Utd in the Grimsby Town defeat

Benjamin Sesko has not made his first Premier League start for United since his summer move and all three of his league appearances have come from the bench.

The former Newcastle and Arsenal target replaced Casemiro in the second half of United’s dramatic 3-2 win over Burnley in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

Speaking after the Premier League result, Ruben Amorim explained why Sesko didn’t start against Burnley and why he was the 10th penalty kick taker for his side.

“He [Sesko] finished the game with cramps, really in the limit, that’s why we protected Ben from the penalties,” he told reporters after Saturday’s 3-2 result, as per The Daily Mail.

“And today was that reason, too. Josh [Zirkzee] is also an international striker, but I was thinking that during pre-season, Ben didn’t do 90 minutes, and he did that on Wednesday.

“After the problem of [Matheus] Cunha [getting injured], you don’t know if the full game in the middle of the week has something to do with the injury today.”

United beat Newcastle in the race to sign Sesko last month and the Red Devils agreed to pay an initial transfer fee of £66.3m for the Slovenia international.
