Benjamin Sesko appeared on the radar of Manchester United fans after the penalty shootout defeat in the second-round Carabao Cup encounter against Grimsby Town on Wednesday evening.

Manchester United were placed on the back foot in the 22nd minute of the Carabao Cup clash after Charles Vernam put Grimsby Town 1-0 up at Blundell Park.

Darragh Burns floated a cross into the far side of the box and Charles Vernam took a touch before drilling his shot past Andre Onana at the United No 1’s near post.

Andre Onana was at the centre of Grimsby’s second of the night only eight minutes after Vernam broke the deadlock, with the error-prone United star at fault with his latest mistake.

The 29-year-old Cameroonian shot-stopper was unable to clear a Grimsby cross and Tyrell Warren pounced on the opportunity and put his side 2-0 up on Wednesday.

United were erratic in the first half after being stunned at Blundell Park, with Grimsby being 2-0 up on the scoreboard at half-time in the Carabao Cup match.

Benjamin Sesko’s display vs Grimsby Town in the second-round Carabao Cup clash had one major talking point for Man Utd fans

Bryan Mbeumo climbed off the bench in the second half and the former Brentford ace netted for Manchester United by placing his shot into the bottom corner.

United forced the Grimsby Town clash to penalties after a corner from Mason Mount found its way to Harry Maguire, who fired a thumping header in at the back post.

However, Grimsby knocked United out of the Carabao Cup after a stunning 12-11 win on penalties in the second-round encounter at Blundell Park on Wednesday.

United fans were left deeply divided over one key moment involving Benjamin Sesko after the striker surprisingly stepped up for the 10th penalty in the thrilling shootout.

“Sesko taking the 10th [penalty] annoyed me, f—— hell,” one Red Devils supporter tweeted.

Another United fan posted: “Sesko being the 10th penalty taker was also so weird to me. He’s taken 11 in his career and not missed any.”

“The most embarrassing thing was Sesko taking the 10th penalty,” someone else claimed.

While a fourth X user said: “My thoughts: Sesko [is an] €80 million [signing] and is only 10th to take a penalty. That doesn’t bode well.”

And a fifth added: “Our brand-new striker took the last penalty for an outfield player.”

“That was the most crazy thing about tonight,” another commented.

A seventh simply suggested: “The team probably did not want the pressure to all fall on him.”

“His confidence must be on the floor,” somebody else argued.

Benjamin Sesko still needs time at Man Utd and the signs were clearly there during the Grimsby Town defeat

Sesko was United’s fourth summer signing for Ruben Amorim, but the Red Devils entered the race late to sign the Slovenia international from RB Leipzig this month.

The 22-year-old Slovenian forward’s first two appearances in the Premier League season for United since his arrival at Old Trafford have come from the bench.

United manager Amorim turned to Sesko for the Grimsby clash and the former RB Leipzig striker was still ‘rough around the edges’ with his overall performance.

It will take time for the former Newcastle and Gunners target to find his feet at United, but Sesko will need to build on his confidence in the short term.
