Sweden boss explains reason why he benched Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof

Manchester United players will be returning from international duty this week as Erik ten Hag prepares to face Brentford.

As the week begins, Manchester United fans will be counting down the days until Premier League action returns.

United haven’t exactly impressed in the Premier League this season, winning just two of the first seven games.

Still, the international breaks frustrate supporters and many will be hoping to see United hit back with a win after a difficult period.

Erik ten Hag remains under pressure and will hope to have all of his players coming back from international duty unscathed.

Sweden boss on Victor Lindelof

Some may have been concerned when Victor Lindelof was only used as a substitute for Sweden against Slovakia on Friday night.

Lindelof is the Sweden captain but was only brought on for around half an hour in a 2-2 draw with Slovakia.

Noussair Mazraoui and Harry Maguire are both out injured so Ten Hag certainly won’t want Lindelof to have picked up any kind of knock.

Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has addressed the situation though, telling Fotbollskanalen that Lindelof just wasn’t ready to start.

Lindelof made his first league appearance of the season against Aston Villa before the international break, coming off the bench at half time to play at right back.

Tomasson was therefore cautious with Lindelof but maintains that the United defender is an ‘important player’ moving forward.

“He is an important player but has just come back from injury and only played 45 minutes. He can come in and help the team if needed,” said Tomasson.

Lindelof could leave Manchester United

Lindelof may be involved for Sweden against Estonia on Monday night ahead of returning to Manchester.

The defender may well be called upon to start against Brentford this weekend given the problems for Mazraoui, Maguire, Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

This means Lindelof may be pressed into action at right back with Diogo Dalot still needed on the left side.

Lindelof will be looking to impress if he does receive that chance, but whether he can land an extended future at United remains to be seen.

The defender is out of contract at the end of the season and is already attracting interest.

AC Milan want Lindelof with Zlatan Ibrahimovic interested in bringing his compatriot to the San Siro.

Lindelof’s wife Maja isn’t thinking too much about a transfer right now but a move in 2025 may become a reality for the former Benfica ace.
