Steve McClaren spent two years as Erik ten Hag’s right-hand man at Manchester United before leaving the club this summer.
When Erik ten Hag was appointed as Manchester United boss in 2022, he made the decision to appoint Steve McClaren as one of his assistants.
Steve McClaren was familiar with Erik Ten Hag, but he also brought experience of English football, the Premier League and of course Manchester United having been Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant previously.
However, there was a huge shift in Ten Hag’s coaching staff this summer with Benni McCarthy and Mitchell van der Gaag both departing.
McClaren also left over the summer to take up the Jamaica international team manager role.
Just weeks after his departure, McClaren has lifted the lid on life at United, including the new owners and their relationship with Ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag narrowly avoided Man United sack
McClaren and Ten Hag had the difficult task of steering United through the takeover saga, which finally came to a conclusion in December with Sir Jim Ratcliffe buying a 25 percent stake.
The minority takeover deal also handed sporting control to Ratcliffe and Ineos, and they wasted no time making sweeping changes at the club.
There was a major reshuffle of the boardroom and the footballing structure with Omar Berrada appointed as CEO.
But attention then quickly turned to the management and Ten Hag found himself under huge pressure at the end of last season. United finished eighth in the Premier League but Ten Hag seemingly saved his job by beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Despite holding talks with several managerial candidates over the summer, Ineos eventually put their faith in Ten Hag and awarded him a contract extension.

Even with a new contract, the jury is still out on Ten Hag with Ineos only extending his stay until 2026.
When asked if the treatment of Ten Hag has been unfair at United, McClaren told The Telegraph: “Absolutely.
“Perception is not reality and that is a tough job. Ole has admitted to that. Rangnick similar.
“Someone had to come in and steady the ship at least.
“I have got to say with Ineos, I see a great future for Manchester United. I think they are behind him [Ten Hag] and if they continue like that and stick together United will succeed.”
