Sky Sports pundit slams ‘weak’ Manchester United player for looking ‘disinterested’ in derby loss

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford scored the team’s opener in the derby against City with a blistering strike.

Marcus Rashford‘s sixth goal of the season was an unstoppable effort to give Manchester United the lead against City.

However, with the team slipping to a 3-1 loss, Rashford will reflect on a lack of ruthlessness when presented with further opportunities.

Rashford’s performance was under close scrutiny after his emotional Players’ Tribune post in the lead-up to the derby, which generated a mixed response from United supporters.

Marcus Rashford criticised

Marcus Rashford’s goal was not enough for Manchester United and the England international’s performance was still picked apart.

Just like Erling Haaland’s late strike for City did not mean he played well or had a good game either, the rest of Rashford’s game was criticised.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (4/3 10.30am), former Premier League player Stephen Warnock said he was not impressed with the Manchester United forward.

Warnock said: “He looked disinterested again. It was almost like he’s scored his goal and that was the point he was like ‘I’ve done my bit now’. The tracking back the working hard, the being strong in possession [wasn’t there].”

Discussing Rashford’s appeal for a foul in the lead-up to Phil Foden’s equaliser, the pundit dismissed the call.

He said: “That’s weak, thats not a player looking to get hold of the ball, take a challenge and accept it, that was a get of jail card. Not an ‘I can’t be bothered’, but a weakness in his game that we wouldn’t have seen when he was in that red hot form last year and that’s crept in at the moment.”

He added that ‘there is a lot more to Marcus Rashford’ than we are currently seeing, but added of his goal: “He could hit that ball 100 times and he might score three or four of those opportunities, may be only one. It’s the rest of the game which doesn’t look right.”

Marcus Rashford not 100 per cent

Marcus Rashford was unable to complete the game and manager Erik ten Hag explained afterwards that the forward is playing despite not being 100 per cent.

This, to some extent, explains Rashford looking a little lethargic at times out of possession, however, this doesn’t cut much ice with supporters, because it has been a theme of the player’s performances this season.

Rashford’s goal was his sixth strike of the season. He also has six assists to his name.
