Manchester United have officially locked down Kobbie Mainoo to a new five-year contract, and the decision sees several winners at the club.

Two years after talks began over a new contract for Kobbie Mainoo, Manchester United have finally got an agreement over the line.

After lots of talk, now United have officially confirmed Mainoo’s contract extension, which keeps him at the club until 2031 at least.

The decision is a popular one, with five winners and one loser from this contract news.

Winners

Starting with the winners from the decision.

Kobbie Mainoo: The biggest of all the winners is the player himself. Mainoo bet on himself, holding out for the contract he’s good enough to earn, and stayed committed to the club despite an awful 18 months for him.

Mainoo has signed a £135k-a-week deal which will end when he is 26, and this backing from the club shows they believe that he will be a key figure in a period when the target is winning number 21.

If Mainoo felt mistreated in the past, the club are making up for this. Now, he needs to continue backing up the hype with his wages, meaning he needs to be counted on.

Not a youngster anymore, this deal solidifies it.

Michael Carrick: It is yet to be confirmed whether Carrick will be appointed the permanent Manchester United boss for next season. But even if he is replaced, Ineos have ensured Carrick’s legacy with the Mainoo decision.

Carrick came in to stabilise United, and part of that has been restoring Mainoo’s importance to the team.

With Mainoo starting, Carrick has a 75% win rate, and this makes the number 37 vital to his plans. So, United handing Mainoo a new deal could also be seen as an indication of them backing him as head coach.

Stephen Torpey: The academy director is another winner from the Mainoo decision, but not directly.

The treatment of Mainoo had seen concerns arise over academy integration into the first team, which would have made Torpey’s job a lot more difficult to attract talent and convince others to stay.

But Mainoo getting a big contract and being platformed showcases how the academy-to-first-team link is still there, a role model for the youngsters who are next up.

JJ Gabriel: In a similar way to Torpey, Gabriel is a big winner from the club, clearly putting Mainoo in place to be a leading figure for the next five years at least.

Gabriel is expected to push for a first-team debut next season, and seeing Mainoo there already, having followed a similar route through the academy, will give him added belief that Old Trafford is the best place for his career.

Hopefully, this is a factor in Gabriel’s decision to sign a professional deal with United.

Manchester United Fans: Outside of Mainoo himself, the fanbase is a huge winner from the contract extension.

This is because, in the eyes of many, Mainoo embodies Manchester United and everything the club historically stands for.

Due to this, the fans have loved Mainoo’s resurgence in 2026, and he remains one of the biggest cheers inside Old Trafford when the team news is read out.

Jason Wilcox: In signing Mainoo up to a new contract, Wilcox has done his job, but he’s still a winner in the situation.

If Wilcox had let Mainoo slip away from United, he would have been the least popular man in Old Trafford every week.

This decision alone has bought him good will from fans and shows he understands United.

Loser

Quite telling about how positive the news is, there is only one loser, and fans will already know who.

Ruben Amorim: It must be tearing Amorim up to see Mainoo shining in the United team and proving him wrong week after week.

Mainoo has made Amorim look silly, shining in every aspect of the game that the Portuguese head coach claimed he couldn’t do.

To think that in an alternate universe, Amorim would have sold Mainoo in January if he hadn’t gotten himself sacked is crazy and shows absolutely that Ineos made the right decision, but it should never have gotten so bad.

It is the worst decision he made at United, and will likely be a black mark on his record that other clubs might hold against him when he looks to return to management.
