Former Manchester United and Aberdeen manager Sir Alex Ferguson has reacted to Scott McTominay’s development at Napoli after the Scotland midfielder left Old Trafford in 2024.
Scott McTominay has spent two seasons at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and has been a key first-team player for outgoing Napoli manager Antonio Conte.
The 29-year-old former Manchester United star had a major impact in his debut season in Italy after lifting the Serie A trophy with Napoli in the 2024-25 season.
McTominay was also on France Football’s 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist in 2025 after his impressive performances for Napoli in his post-Old Trafford playing spell.

Scott McTominay ended his debut season at Napoli by scoring 13 times and registering six assists in 36 matches across all competitions for the Italian side.
The former Manchester United youth academy product enjoyed another strong campaign at Napoli, despite Antonio Conte’s men falling short in their title defence.
Scotland international McTominay netted 14 times and picked up four assists in 44 matches in all competitions for Napoli in the 2025-26 campaign.
Speaking to GQ magazine, McTominay revealed that he was in awe at the praise that former manager Sir Alex Ferguson dropped on him over his success at Napoli.
“I spoke to Sir Alex in September, which was amazing,” he said.
“He called me, and I was extremely grateful that he took the time to speak to me and just ask me about how I was doing and football and stuff like that. So, it was lovely to speak to him.”

McTominay had spent his entire playing career at United before the Red Devils allowed him to leave Old Trafford in a deal worth £25.7m in 2024.
The Napoli and Scotland midfielder admitted that it was incredibly touching for legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to check on him long after he retired.
“I was only a young kid when he was leaving [Manchester United], so for him to think of me was extremely special, because he’s the greatest to ever do it, in my opinion,” McTominay added.
Ferguson, who is widely regarded as one of the best managers of all time, bowed out of Old Trafford after Man Utd’s last Premier League title win back in 2013.
