Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, Schmeichel revealed it was his “ultimate” desire to play in England and at Wembley when he was a player.
The United legend had the opportunity to do so when he was representing Denmark, but the Red Devils also “put a bid” in for him around the same time.
“When I was a kid growing up in Denmark, one of my biggest dreams was to play at Wembley – it was the ultimate,” Schmeichel said.
“My first game there was against England, and in between having my afternoon kip and the pre-match meal, I was told Manchester United had put a bid in for me.
“I went into the game with that in mind, and it was a fantastic experience for me – I think I played well.”
Schmeichel on Wembley and Man Utd
Peter Schmeichel started the match for Denmark at Wembley against England, with Gary Lineker’s second-half strike securing a 1-0 win for the Three Lions.
The aforementioned international friendly was played in 1990, which was a year before United completed their move for Schmeichel.
Schmeichel was a boyhood United fan and admitted that moving to Old Trafford was “another dream” moment for him after his “very special” match for Denmark.
“Getting a taste of Wembley, and understanding that Manchester United actually want you, which was another dream of mine, makes that game very special to me,” he said.
“I don’t think many people would have a friendly that carries that kind of importance, among the best games you’ve ever played. That’s a bit weird, but that’s how it is for me.”
