Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has candidly opened up on one of the most important things that Sir Alex Ferguson offered him during his time at Old Trafford.
Signed from Leeds United in 1992 for a £1m fee, Eric Cantona had a long-lasting impact at Manchester United and was a catalyst for change during the 1990s.
The 57-year-old Frenchman was a central figure under Sir Alex Ferguson, who held deep admiration for Cantona during his legendary reign in the Old Trafford dugout.
One of United’s iconic No 7s, Cantona was a larger-than-life presence at the Premier League side and transformed United into a trophy-winning club during the 1990s.
During his prolific five seasons at Old Trafford, the United legend lifted four Premier League titles and two FA Cups under legendary former manager Ferguson.
Cantona’s presence was felt at the Red Devils by his former club teammates, who were in awe at his brilliance both on the pitch and off it.
An eccentric figure at times, the former France international became club captain in 1996 after United legend Steve Bruce made his exit from Old Trafford.
Cantona’s incredible career came to a sudden end in 1997 after he stunned Ferguson – and the whole world – with his retirement at only the age of 30.

Cantona talks Man Utd and Ferguson
Following Eric Cantona’s official retirement from football, the Manchester United legend ventured into the world of acting and music.
Cantona remains a beloved figure long after his time at the Red Devils, with even the Frenchman holding a special connection to the club and the supporters.
Speaking to French newspaper Ouest-France, the footballer-turned-musician opened up on his time at Old Trafford and playing under Ferguson at United.
Cantona admitted that he relished in the “freedom” that United legend Ferguson offered him, saying that he did “everything” he could to maintain it for matches.
“Freedom, I have already won it on the pitch,” he said.
“When you have a position where you have more freedom than others, you have responsibilities.
“This freedom must help the team win. Alex Ferguson gave me that freedom at Manchester United. I did everything to continue to have it in every match.”
Cantona continued: “My previous life allows me to do all this, I am well aware of it. But we depend on the desires of others.
“Playing football allowed me to make my first films, not the rest. Not to write, compose, and sing what I want. For that, I owe nothing to anyone.”
Man Utd legend Cantona on his connection to music
Cantona has long pursued his love for music and is dropping his first live album, ‘Cantona Sings Eric – First Tour Ever,’ on 29th March.
The former United superstar also went on tour last October in the UK and Europe, with Cantona dropping his debut EP, ‘I’ll Make My Own Heaven,’ in 2023.
Speaking on his love for music, Cantona said: “Music comes before human beings.
“It’s nature, the rain, the wind, vibrations older than us. No-one can live without music.”
He added: “More than a sound, it’s a [colour].
“The Red. The one from my father’s two opera vinyl box sets. He listened to them over and over when he painted at home.
“I watched him do it, he taught me the basics of painting. I was what, six years old, eight years old.”
