Manchester United legend Eric Cantona admitted that he holds deep admiration for two iconic ex-players after they achieved something he was unable to do in his life.
The iconic 57-year-old Frenchman created a long-lasting impact at Old Trafford – and on English football – after his spell with Manchester United in the 1990s.
Sir Alex Ferguson was a big admirer of Eric Cantona and finally brought the prolific French former forward to the Premier League club in 1992 for a fee of £1.2m.
Following his exit from United’s rivals Leeds United, Cantona became a linchpin figure for Sir Alex Ferguson and enjoyed incredible success at Old Trafford.
The former France international, known for his incredible showmanship, lifted four Premier League titles and two FA Cups during his five seasons at the Red Devils.
Cantona, unsurprisingly, was thought of highly by his former teammates and United legends Roy Keane and Gary Neville raved about his influence on the team.
Despite his legendary success at Old Trafford, the ex-United star stunned the world in 1997 when he made the decision to leave the club and retire from football.

Cantona in awe at two football legends
Eric Cantona, who was one of four world-class players that Ferguson managed, pursued different ventures after his prolific playing career suddenly ended.
The Manchester United legend has worked in films and has even dabbled in music, with Cantona announcing his debut EP, ‘I’ll Make My Own Heaven,’ in 2023.
Cantona played alongside several talented players during his spell at Old Trafford, including United legends Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and David Beckham.
However, the iconic former United No 7 admitted that he deeply admired Red Devils legend Ryan Giggs and AC Milan icon Paolo Maldini.
Ryan Giggs, who recently dropped a bold prediction for United, played alongside Cantona and spent his entire career at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Paolo Maldini, on the other hand, was a former player that Ferguson wanted to bring to Old Trafford and the Italian had incredible success during his time at the San Siro.
Speaking to The Athletic in 2022, Cantona insisted that the longevity of former teammate Giggs and ex-Milan defender Maldini was something he “cannot do.”
“I am very happy. I still live great moments, in another world, which is much better I think than becoming a manager or staying in the world of football,” he said.
“I don’t know if it is better. I admire Ryan Giggs or Paolo Maldini, who played in the same club for 20 years as a professional.
“I admire them because me, I cannot do it, I get bored very quickly, maybe because I have other passions.”
Cantona on football being ‘unique’
Known for his eccentric personality, Cantona admitted that he was happy to pursue acting in his life and described the intensity of football as “unique.”
However, the United legend warned that someone can become a prisoner of their past and that he was fortunate to avoid this due to the other interests he pursued.
“But it is not equal,” Cantona said.
“Football is unique, the intensity is unique but when you retire from football, you can live with your memories and you become a prisoner of your past, or you have new passions, and I am lucky that people still want to work with people who want me to express myself.
“I depend on the desire of these people.”
