Ethan Wheatley was among several Manchester United youngsters who celebrated a wonder goal scored by an academy teammate.

During his time at Carrington, Ethan Wheatley was one of Manchester United’s brightest young talents.

This summer, United prioritised finding a loan move for Wheatley, and the 19-year-old is now gathering experience at League One side Northampton Town.

Wheatley is in great form at Northampton and has become a regular starter, but he continues to keep a close eye on his academy teammates back in Manchester.

Ethan Wheatley reacts to Jacob Devaney wonder goal

Just a few weeks ago, before United’s trip to Anfield, Jacob Devaney was involved in first-team training under Ruben Amorim.

The 18-year-old midfielder, who also plays at right-back and centre-back, is a regular in the Under-21s. In the recent Vertu Trophy clash against Notts County, he scored a sensational solo effort.

Similar to Micky van de Ven’s incredible goal in the Champions League for Tottenham, Devaney picked up the ball in his own half and dribbled through several defenders before calmly finishing the move.

Jacob Devaney proudly posted a video of the goal on his Instagram, and his United academy teammates flooded to the comments.

Wheatley said: “Since when could you do that?”, while Gabriele Biancheri replied: “Won’t hear the end of this”.

Godwill Kukonki, who has also been involved in first-team training, commented: “Cheeky assist”, while Chido Obi celebrated by typing: “Skipper”.

Jacob Devaney is Man United’s very own Declan Rice

There is an exciting batch of youngsters on the brink of graduating to United’s first team, and Devaney has a very strong chance of making it into Amorim’s plans.

Devaney has been compared to Declan Rice due to his style of play in central midfield.

Compared to other young talents, Devaney has relatively flown under the radar, but given United’s need for midfield reinforcements, he has an opportunity to step up into the first team.

Amorim wants an ‘athletic’ midfielder and Devaney ticks all the boxes. He is stepping up his game to a new level in the Under-21s and will be itching to play senior football sooner rather than later.
