Manchester United’s season was on the brink of success before the campaign came to a sudden halt.
Hopefully whenever football does resume, all the players will be at 100 per cent. That hasn’t been the case so far in 2020.
When all the players are fit, there will be fresh combinations for Manchester United which can make the team even better.
Here is a look at seven possible link ups which could be top class. A look at this really shows how much untapped potential there is in this United squad, before it is added to…
Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly
Eric Bailly has not conceded a single goal in 2020 in the matches he has played.
He has mostly been used as a back-up though, or mixed in with a back three.
We are yet to see Bailly given a run of games alongside club captain Harry Maguire.
Victor Lindelof has done well lately too, but you just wonder whether Bailly and Maguire would be an even better combination, with their different styles meshing well together.
Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford
Manchester United’s big new signing has yet to play with the club’s top scorer. This one is pretty self explanatory.
Together they could be lethal, and Fernandes has already struck up a partnership with Anthony Martial.
The way Rashford likes to drop deep from out wide should see him link up with Fernandes a lot.
If they strike it off, Rashford’s numbers could really explode to another level.
Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba
Bruno Fernandes is the player many wanted Paul Pogba to be. He scores goals, he creates them, and he is a leader.
Now add Pogba in alongside him and his job gets even easier. Fernandes will make Pogba better too.
Better defences might be able to concentrate their efforts on trying to shut down Fernandes. But with Pogba alongside him, it will be almost impossible. If they shut the Portugal star down, Pogba will cut them apart.
It would be unfortunate if Pogba leaves without ever playing alongside Fernandes, with injury so far preventing him from doing so.
Odion Ighalo and Marcus Rashford
Odion Ighalo has done well since joining United on loan, and a permanent deal would be in the club’s interests.
Ighalo’s hold-up play has been a joy to watch at times and Rashford could really benefit from playing alongside him.
Anthony Martial is a bright talent, but one who is still to refine his game as a striker and is not as comfortable with his back to goal as the Nigerian.
Over the course of a season, Rashford will get chances to play with Ighalo, and will likely thrive.
Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood
United’s young trio began to play together at the end of December and early January and looked really dangerous.
Combined, the trio have scored more than 45 goals this season with each surpassing double figures.
The only complaint is that United did not unleash them all on teams and go ‘all out attack’.
In games we did, like at home to Partizan and Newcastle, it paid off. Lets see more of it.
Fred, Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba
Injury meant we did not get to see Fred, Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba as a midfield three at all in the same starting line up this season.
This combination would have allowed Pogba a free role as a number 10.
Bruno Fernandes should be first choice in the position, but Pogba has the ability to cause real damage in an attacking role when freed of defensive responsibilities.
Give Fernandes a rest at times, and put Pogba at the point of attack. It could pay off.
Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly
What if the two defenders who have spent most of the season on the sidelines turned out to be United’s best pairing?
Instead of competing against each other, Bailly and Tuanzebe may help each other.
Maguire and Lindelof have done well, but United could allow Bailly and Tuanzebe a chance to form a pairing in cup games when the side is rotated.
It’s possible, that they turn out to be the best pairing of all. Both players are fast, strong in the air, and Tuanzebe is billed as a future captain. First, they have to stay fit.
