Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens has been a massive upgrade this season on both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

Despite arriving to doubts and wonder over whether or not he would be good enough to take up the mantle of being a number one in the Premier League.

The Belgian arrived with relative inexperience, but Senne Lammens has been top quality.

Testament to his quality, Manchester United’s season has been saved by Lammens with vital interventions earning plenty of points, although just two clean sheets is a record he will be keen to improve.

Shockingly, Lammens wasn’t even United’s first choice, and it appears the doubts around the young goalkeeper were shared in his home country.

What Belgian insiders were worried about with Senne Lammens joining Manchester United

The shot stopper has been a massive improvement on both of United’s previous starting goalkeepers under Amorim.

Of all the praise he has gotten, Sir Alex Ferguson’s double hailing of Lammens spoke volumes, and we are pretty convinced that given time, Lammens will be the goalkeeper United need.

Now, speaking on the Transfers Podcast, Duncan Castles has revealed that prior to his move, sources in Belgium were concerned that Lammens would struggle with the pressure at Old Trafford.

“But talking to people in Belgium before he signed, their view was very much this guy is on the route to be a top international goalkeeper.

“But he needs to choose his next career move well. If he goes to Manchester United, there’s a risk he gets eaten up by the environment there. If he chooses a mid-table Premier League team, if he were to get to a Brighton or a Brentford somewhere like that, then he could really develop out of the harsh headlights; he will be a success there.

“Then the next move will be to Manchester United, City, Arsenal, somewhere like that. So it’s obvious that it’s a difficult place to play, and Ruben Amorim has talked about it being a difficult place to play.”

Lammens is developing well at Manchester United

When he arrived, there were no illusions that Lammens was the final article in terms of his goalkeeping quality, but he had the potential to reach new heights.

Lammens was immediately an upgrade which has meant he nailed down a starting goalkeeper position with relative ease, and he has improved over the past three months.

This has been evident in his shot stopping, with more coming through his hands with some heroic stops being pulled out of nowhere.

Lammens has also impressed on the ball with how safe he is in possession compared with Onana, who had a tendency to give the ball away way too often.

We won’t see the best of Lammens this year, but he should be a lot better by 2027.
