Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs revealed one moment that was a rude awakening for the Class of ’92 after their takeover of Salford City.

Class of ’92 alumni Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville partnered up and took over Salford City in 2014 as part of a collective bid.

Each of the aforementioned secured a 10 per cent stake in the club, with billionaire Singaporean businessman Peter Lim capturing the other 50 per cent stake.

Manchester United legend David Beckham, who was also a key member of the Class of ’92, purchased a 10 per cent share in Salford City from Peter Lim in 2019.

Salford City were in Division One North in the Northern Premier League at the time that the Class of ’92 and Valencia owner Lim took control of the club.

The Ammies have seen an incredible rise in football since the takeover, with Salford City achieving a run of four promotions in five years.

Salford City, who lifted the EFL Trophy under the Class of ’92 ownership, have been in League Two for five consecutive seasons after their National League play-off win.

Ryan Giggs has played an active part at Salford City and the United legend has even taken on a new role at the League Two club in 2024.

Man Utd legend Giggs on Salford City

Ryan Giggs made an appearance at the Radlett Centre recently and candidly opened up about his Manchester United career and his time at Salford City.

During his appearance on stage, the former United star made his position clear on his future in football management after resigning as Wales boss in 2022.

Giggs also broke his silence on Erik ten Hag and where he stands on the current United manager amid the struggles the Dutchman has faced at Old Trafford.

Speaking to the live audience, the 50-year-old Welshman admitted the Class of ’92’s venture with Salford City was “different” compared to their previous experience.

Giggs revealed that both he and his former United teammates were in for a rude awakening when they saw the attitude at Salford City after the takeover.

He was baffled when he learned the manager at Salford City at the time had booked a two-week holiday in pre-season, which was a culture shock for Giggs and Co.

According to The Athletic, Giggs said: “It’s different, especially when you have been in football at the top level.

“When we first took over, the manager had booked a two-week holiday in pre-season. ‘I book my family holiday at the same time every year.’

“But it’s your job, isn’t it? ‘I’m not changing it.’ So yeah, we had a few things we had to get our heads around.”

Giggs on Man Utd connection to Salford City

Despite their initial struggles with Salford City, Giggs insisted that the Class of ’92 were happy with their decision to take over the Ammies.

The former Wales boss insisted that Salford City have a “real United connection” after some of his legendary ex-United teammates attend matches at Moor Lane.

“We love it,” Giggs said.

“Myself, Gary, Nicky, Scholesy. Phil and Becks are in America, so [they] don’t get to a lot of games.

“But the rest of the lads do. Roy Keane loves coming to home games. Steve Bruce comes because his son, Alex, is now assistant manager. So, there’s a real United connection.”
