Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has taken up his first role in football since he stepped down as Wales manager amid the allegations he faced at the time.

Ryan Giggs previously served as interim manager at Manchester United and was assistant manager under former Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

The 50-year-old Welshman took his first steps into management after he departed from Old Trafford, with Giggs appointed Wales manager in 2018.

The United legend was forced to take a step back from his duties as Wales boss in 2020 after he was arrested, with Rob Page taking over as caretaker manager.

Giggs, who has maintained his innocence, resigned from his post in 2022 ahead of his trial amid allegations against him of assault and controlling behaviour.

The ex-United and Wales star was cleared of the allegations of assault against his former partner, Kate Greville, and her sister, Emma, in 2023.

Man Utd legend Giggs returns to football

Following his fight to clear his name, Ryan Giggs’ future in football had been cast in doubt after he left his role as head coach of the Wales national team.

The former Wales international previously broke his silence on a return to management, as well as ruling out plans to manage one club in particular.

According to BBC Sport, Manchester United legend Giggs has now taken up a new role of director of football at League Two side Salford City.

The ex-Wales boss is a co-owner of Salford City alongside fellow Class of ’92 members Phil Neville, David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes.

BBC Sport added that Giggs’ role at Salford City has ‘not been formally confirmed,’ although it was mentioned in a press release last month from the club.

What did the press release on Giggs say?

Giggs, who owns a 10 per cent stake in Salford City, was named in a press release after Alex Bruce took up his role as a first-team coach at the club in February.

The former United star’s role as director of football was featured, with Giggs welcoming former Ipswich Town defender Alex Bruce to Salford City.

“We’re delighted to have Alex join us here to expand our coaching staff, on the recommendation of Karl [Robinson] who was keen to bring him in,” Giggs said at the time.

“Alex will bring a lot of football experience with him and we’d like to welcome him warmly to the club.”
