Ruben Amorim says Erik ten Hag did one thing better than him at Man Utd, it needs to change

Ruben Amorim’s time as the Manchester United head coach has so far been far from ideal.

When appointed, Manchester United felt that one of Europe’s greatest young coaches had arrived at Carrington, with big things expected.

Ruben Amorim has promised big things but warned fans it will take time – with the past two months being nothing short of a disaster at Old Trafford – with the Red Devils sitting 13th in the league.

Much of the issues United have faced can be attributed to Amorim having practically zero time working on the training pitch. However, this is no longer the case as the schedule eases – which means we expect to see gradual improvements made.

Until we see this improvement, Amorim will remain frustrated by his team – and he’s now suggested Erik ten Hag did something better at the club than he can.

On Friday, United take on Leicester City in the FA Cup, a fixture which sees Ruud van Nistelrooy return to Old Trafford for the first time since his successful interim head coach role at United.

Due to the background stories in this game, Amorim has been quizzed over the previous regime and reasons for not keeping Van Nistelrooy in his coaching staff.

Speaking on MUTV, Amorim admitted that Van Nistelrooy and Ten Hag trained this United squad better than he could.

“They were better than me in training this team”, Amorim admitted. “It’s really hard because I’m a really proud guy, but I take this normally. It’s not awkward.”

This is something which cannot continue, and we would argue now Amorim has time to actually work with his players, it will change rather rapidly.

However, with this admission – it could be argued that Amorim should have kept Van Nistelrooy at the club, but the head coach has shared why this wasn’t an option.

In the build-up to the game on Friday, Van Nistelrooy warned Amorim that he knows the player’s strengths and weaknesses.

Speaking later in the day on Thursday, Amorim shared with fans why the United legend ultimately was not kept in his coaching staff.

“I could have kept Ruud [van Nistelrooy] because it was a good thing for me or a popular thing to do”, Amorim began. “But I will not put Ruud in front of my guys, no matter what.

“Then I had to put a person like Ruud at the end of the hierarchy on my staff, and I think that was not fair on Ruud.”

This makes complete sense, considering Van Nistelrooy has since taken on the manager role at a Premier League club.
