Ruben Amorim will work with a small squad this season as there is no European football, and that small squad could be set for a miraculous boost.
Lisandro Martinez has been out of action since suffering a cruciate ligament injury on February 2, 2025, during a game against Crystal Palace.
Martinez was just beginning to become important under Ruben Amorim before all that progress was swept from under his feet.
His leadership qualities are valued highly by the Man Utd manager, which is why he stayed close to the team, even travelling to the USA and striking a positive tone.
It seems he could be set for a miraculous recovery.

Lisandro Martinez injury update
Generally, a cruciate ligament injury takes about nine months to recover from, and then with rehab and getting back to match fitness, the overall return timeline is anywhere between 10-11 months.
That would put Martinez’s expected return date to be after the November international break, the final one before the club game stretch begins.
However, Laurie Whitwell, speaking on The Talk of the Devils podcast, reported that Martinez is working to shatter that general trend.
Martinez is aiming for a return to action after just three Premier League games, which puts his prospective return date just after the first international break.
Man Utd play their third league game of the season on August 30th, before the international break, after which their next game is a spicy Manchester Derby on September 14th.

It would be a miracle if Martinez is in the squad for that game, even if he doesn’t play, because Amorim is unlikely to throw him straight into the deep end.
Still, that timeline is easily at least two months ahead of what is generally expected, because a seven-month return from a cruciate ligament injury is miraculous, if Martinez manages to make it happen.
It says everything about the player’s mentality and professionalism. Any return before the international break in October should be celebrated as a mark of those two traits.
Martinez remains important for Amorim
It can be argued that Martinez will rejoin a different team from the one he was a part of before getting injured, because things have changed.
Mainly, he has a new competitor for that left-footed, left centre-back role who emerged due to his absence.
Ayden Heaven is here to stay, while Luke Shaw will hope to turn a new page on his injury-riddled career.
However, Martinez’s intangibles make him as important to the team as his qualities on the pitch, and for that reason, he remains important for Amorim.
He will be another strong voice in the dressing room, urging everyone to keep the standards high and driving the squad’s ambitions by echoing Amorim’s sentiments.
Coming back from such a serious injury well ahead of the expected timeline will only serve to reinforce the respect his teammates and the staff have for him.
