Manchester United put on a first-half masterclass to storm into a three-goal lead against Athletic Club.

The Red Devils will take a huge advantage back with them to Old Trafford for the second leg of the Europa League semi-final in one week.

Ruben Amorim relied on experience to lead the way in Spain, with Casemiro, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes all playing key roles in the victory.

It was undeniably Manchester United’s biggest game of the season, but Amorim’s squad rose to the occasion and now have one foot in the final.

While United’s experienced players led from the front, Ruben Amorim pointed out two players who were “nervous”.

Thankfully, United’s three-goal blitz in the first half helped to settle the nerves rattling around the San Mames stadium.

Five-time Champions League winner Casemiro was completely dominant on Europe’s big stage – his experience proved invaluable for Amorim’s side.

After the full-time whistle, Amorim praised Casemiro for his leadership on the pitch but pointed out that both Manuel Ugarte and Patrick Dorgu looked nervous.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Amorim said: “You can feel, especially in the beginning, even players like [Manuel] Ugarte with a lot of experience were a little bit nervous.

“Patrick [Dorgu] is a little bit nervous.

“It’s a semi-final, of course it’s not the Champions League, but it is a European semi-final so these kind of players like Casemiro, Harry and Bruno Fernandes help a lot.”

Amorim’s aim is to win the Premier League as United’s head coach, but at the minute it is the one competition he cannot quite get to grips with.

Since making the move to Manchester, Amorim has been flawless in Europe with United the only unbeaten team remaining in the three continental competitions.

He now finds himself 90 minutes away from taking Manchester United to a European final, but as he has done all season, he will not get ahead of himself.

Despite boasting a three-goal advantage, Amorim will keep his squad laser-focused on the second leg at Old Trafford next week.

Amorim broke a 68-year record by beating Athletic Club, but everything is still to play for in Manchester.
