With Manchester United’s first-team beginning to see improvements across the board, Ruben Amorim is integrating more and more academy talent into training sessions.
This season, Ruben Amorim has survived a storm around his future after a slow start, with his use of the academy among the top criticisms.
Manchester United haven’t granted a single academy debut this season, despite the U21s shining, while most match-days see just one academy player involved.
But now, with pressure easing, there is a better environment to integrate youth and Amorim is preparing Shea Lacey for his United debut.
However, Lacey is not alone in catching Amorim’s eye.

James Overy getting plenty of Manchester United first-team exposure
For Manchester United, it is non-negotiable that youth should be utilised within the first-team, and Amorim on paper has the tendency to do so, debuting three youngsters last season.
Now, alongside Lacey, it seems Australian U20 star James Overy has impressed Amorim, with a growing exposure to the first-team.
The Daily Mail have reported that Overy has been going under the radar, but was called up into senior training on three occasions last week.
This is a sign of the impression which 18-year-old Overy has made on Amorim and his coaching staff. The report quotes one Carrington source as saying, “He’s got one hell of a future ahead of him.”
James Overy shone for Australia during the U20 World Cup
Despite being the youngest player included in Australia’s squad for the U20 World Cup in Chile last month, Overy really impressed.
Fighting his way into the starting line-up, Overy provided an assist for Australia in their 3-1 win vs Cuba.
Overy joined United in 2024 as an elite prospect and despite an injury-ridden first season, he showed glimpses of his ability.
This saw Overy in United senior training before the Europa League final and now he’s clearly caught the eye again as Amorim gives him special treatment.
Still young, Overy has excellent technical ability, along with being quick and strong on the ball. He could be a perfect wing-back solution for when Amad heads to AFCON in January.
