Ruben Amorim finally breaks silence over January window stance as Man Utd manager’s verdict is clear on transfers

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has spoken out on the Red Devils’ potential transfer activity in January ahead of the Liverpool match on Sunday.

Ruben Amorim has overseen a tough start to life at Old Trafford after he replaced Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager in November.

Erik ten Hag was sacked by the Premier League club in late October and United later triggered the £9.25m release clause in Amorim’s Sporting CP contract.

Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge of United for four matches as interim manager before the Red Devils legend left Old Trafford at the start of the November break.

Amorim has overseen 11 matches in charge of United and has only managed four wins across all competitions since his arrival at Old Trafford.

United have lost their last four matches across all competitions under the 39-year-old Portuguese manager, including their last three Premier League matches.

Amorim asked about January transfer window

Manchester United signed off 2024 with a 2-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

Ruben Amorim now faces the toughest test of his United reign so far, with the Red Devils travelling to Anfield on Sunday to face league leaders Liverpool.

United are currently 14th in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are only seven points clear of the relegation zone.

The Red Devils have only managed six league wins in 19 matches in their lacklustre 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Amorim was asked about any potential moves from United in the January transfer window.

“When the window is open, we can try to do something and we will try to do something,” he said, as per the Manchester United official website.

“But I think, in the next weeks, we are going to have more time to train and we can improve, that’s the only way.

“We had a lot of games without training, now we will have more space to grow. You can see that the context is worse in this moment, as we had a lot of losses, so we have to manage everything.”

Amorim inherited his first-team squad from Erik ten Hag and the United manager is widely tipped to revamp his squad to suit his tactical system.

The former Sporting CP boss was not pushed on the positions that he is eyeing up with his first flurry of signings at Old Trafford.

“I will keep that to myself. But we’ll try to do something,” he said.

Amorim on January window vs summer window

United’s first-team squad has been hit with injuries and the likes of Luke Shaw and Mason Mount have both been sidelined.

Amorim also faces uncertainty over players like Marcus Rashford after the United star was axed from the squad for the 2-1 comeback win against Manchester City.

Marcus Rashford hasn’t played for United since he was dropped and the United and England star has hinted that he could leave Old Trafford in the future.

Amorim must also look ahead to the long-term future for other United players, including the contract situations for the likes of Amad Diallo and Harry Maguire.

The United manager has insisted that United’s main bulk of business with transfers will have to wait for the 2025 summer window rather than the January window.

“It’s not the case I am not arriving here and I can spend a lot of money, changing all the team,” Amorim said.
