Ruben Amorim could have achieved something bigger than his titles with Sporting, ex-boss claims, predicts Man Utd future

Manchester United have hired one of the most exciting head coaches in football, securing the services of Ruben Amorim.

And while Manchester United drip-feed supporters Ruben Amorim content from his arrival, the new head coach is busy getting settled in behind the scenes.

Amorim won two league titles with Sporting, becoming the first head coach to do so with the club since the early 1950s.

This led him to Manchester United, but could Amorim have achieved something even bigger if he never joined Sporting in the first place?

Braga president speaks out

Ruben Amorim joined Sporting in 2020 after an impressive job with Braga. And their president still has some regret over his departure.

Speaking this week, quoted via Record, Antonio Salvador is convinced Ruben Amorim was going to turn his side into title contenders.

Salvador said: “He won a League Cup. The first national trophy that Ruben Amorim won was in Braga.

“Leaving? It was a strong blow to the club’s ambitions. If he stayed, we were convinced that we could fight for the national title.”

He added: “Both Ruben and I were clear that in the medium term the objective was to be champions.”

Braga have won two league titles, the last of which came in 1963/64. If Ruben Amorim had been given the time to turn them into league champions, then that would have been even more impressive than his achievements with Sporting.

Prediction for Manchester United

Antonio Salvador believes Ruben Amorim will be a success at Manchester United, where he is the youngest head coach since Sir Matt Busby.

While he accepts this season will be a learning and adjustment process for Amorim and Manchester United’s players, Salvador believes he will come out firing in 2025/26.

He explains: “I have no doubts. This was the ideal moment. You have half a season to prepare the team with your ideas. Next season I believe you will do a great job at Manchester United.”

Amorim’s final game as Sporting boss was appropriately against Braga, with his team coming back to win 4-2.

Salvador had another prediction, adding: “He is a genuine person. He will maintain a good relationship with the press and will quickly win over the entire press in England.”
