Ruben Amorim has departed Manchester United, along with his coaching staff, with his assistant, Carlos Fernandes, first to send a message of gratitude following a 14-month stint at Old Trafford.
Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim on Monday morning as the team is 6th in the Premier League, with lots to play between now and the end of the season.
The board has decided that Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team for Wednesday night’s trip to Burnley in the Premier League. It remains to be seen if the former United midfielder will be in the dugout when the Red Devils kickstart their FA Cup campaign against Brighton on Sunday.
Amorim challenged Ineos less than 24 hours before his dismissal, but United suggested their reasoning behind his dismissal came from the results.

The news means that all of Amorim’s coaching staff have left the club.
While Amorim has yet to break his silence after losing his job as United head coach, his assistant Carlos Fernandes has written a heartfelt message to the club, its players and fans.

Carlos Fernandes reflects on ‘privilege’ at Man Utd
United fans will be interested to hear what Amorim will have to say about his time at the club.
The Portuguese coach will likely argue that he needed more time to turn things around at Old Trafford, but Ineos’ patience wore thin when he decided to criticise his bosses.
Interestingly, Amorim’s assistant Fernandes has wasted no time writing a message to his Instagram followers about spending 14 months at United.
Fernandes describes the experience of being at the biggest football club in the world as a ‘privilege’ before thanking the club, staff members, and the loyal fans.
“Thank you, Manchester United,” Fernandes wrote in a post accompanied by several photos.
“Thank you to the world-class players I had the privilege to coach and to learn from.
“Thank you to the staff members who showed true support.
“Thank you to the fans who stood by us.
“In the end, working at a football club of this dimension doesn’t just test your knowledge — it reveals character.
“A special chapter in my life. Proud to have served as Assistant Manager of Manchester United.”
How will YOU remember Ruben Amorim? What is his LEGACY at Man Utd?
Although Amorim and his backroom team didn’t achieve the desired results, it won’t do Fernandes any harm to have United on his CV as a coach.
Man Utd compensate Ruben Amorim’s five-man backroom team
Amorim took his coaching team from Sporting CP with him to Old Trafford in November 2024.
The sacking means Amorim is set for a hefty compensation package, but the same will apply to Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro, Jorge Vital and Paulo Barreira.
Jonny Evans has returned to United to assist Fletcher with the first team for the foreseeable future.
