Manchester United kept hopes of Champions League qualification alive by beating Lyon in dramatic fashion.

The Red Devils were just minutes away from their season falling to pieces when Lyon took a two-goal lead at Old Trafford.

However, Manchester United were able to beat Lyon 5-4 after Harry Maguire’s dramatic winner sealed a three-goal comeback in extra time.

Ruben Amorim issued a rallying cry to fans just hours before kick-off against Lyon, and supporters and players responded brilliantly by fighting until the very end.

Ruben Amorim ready to take academy ‘risk’ in Premier League

Amorim is under pressure to win the Europa League this season – it is the only way his first season as head coach can be considered a success.

Thursday’s nine-goal thriller kept those dreams alive with United now in the semi-finals of the Europa League where they are set to face Athletic Bilbao.

United have nothing to fight for in the Premier League having slumped down to 14th in the table, so Amorim is now ready to set his sights solely on the Europa League.

After United’s victory, Amorim admitted he is now ready to trust United’s academy players in the Premier League so that key starters can be rested for the Europa League.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Amorim said: “We have to take a risk with the kids in the Premier League… we have to focus on the Europa League”.

Man United academy stars who can take advantage

Amorim will already have one eye on next season when it comes to the Premier League, and putting his faith in academy players lets him test some of the club’s most exciting youngsters.

Harry Amass made his first Premier League start against Newcastle and he was trusted again by Amorim against Lyon on Thursday.

He is one of several academy players who will be looking to get some Premier League minutes for the final games of the season.
